DAVIDSON, N.C. – Sara Lewis' career-high 25 points weren't enough as the George Washington women's basketball team fell to Davidson, 68-58, on Saturday afternoon. The Buff & Blue move to 13-12 overall and 5-7 in Atlantic 10 action.
GW started the game hot, jumping out to a 14-9 lead aided by seven points from Lewis. Despite George Washington's fast start, Davidson answered with its own early baskets, limiting GW's lead to 20-15 after the first.
After the Wildcats opened the second quarter with seven-consecutive points, GW regrouped to take a four-point lead midway through the quarter on a layup from Gabby Reynolds. Davidson flipped a switch after that, going on a 14-3 run, primed to take a 37-30 lead into the halftime break. Reynolds snatched momentum back for GW just before the buzzer, sinking a triple from the top of the key to cut Davidson's lead to just four at the break.
The third quarter was all Lewis as she poured in GW's first 10 points of the second half. She was dominant from midrange and the low post, knocking down turnaround jumpers over the Wildcat defense and bullying her way to the basket for tough finishes at the rim. Lewis' heroics allowed GW to take a 41-39 lead with 6:56 left in the third, but it would be the last lead GW would hold in the contest as Davidson leaned on 31 points from all-conference guard Charlise Dunn to salt away the win.
Lewis (25 points) and Reynolds (22 points) combined for a season-high 47 on the day, the first time this year the pair have scored 20+ points in the same game. Both players also added six rebounds, while Reynolds dished out three assists. Tanah Becker led GW on the glass, pulling down seven rebounds.
GW returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to Philly to face Saint Joseph's for the Hawks' Kids Day game at 11:00 a.m. Live coverage of the matchup will be available on ESPN+.
