Corpuz ties GW All-American Jenna Cone with a program record fifth-career grand slam
ORLANDO – An Ashley Corpuz walk-off grand slam against Florida A&M capped an eventful first day for GW at the Charge on Classic in Orlando. GW beat Dartmouth and Florida A&M by a final of 6-5 in both games, as the Revolutionaries withstood a late comeback attempt from the Big Green before storming back late to beat FAMU on Corpuz's walk-off. GW improved to 7-4 after Friday's games.
Corpuz's grand slam was the fifth of her career and it was the all-important hit of the game, erasing the three-run deficit to clinch the team's fifth-consecutive win. The grand slam for Corpuz was her 27th career home run and first of the season, and it tied her with All-American Jenna Cone for the most grand slams by a Revolutionary in program history.
GW was trailing FAMU, 5-0, before starting its rally with two runs in the sixth. First Corpuz delivered a run on a sac fly, before Emma Fales slapped an RBI single to right field. The rest was history as GW loaded the bases with only one out for the former A-10 All-Conference First Team GW power hitter.
Earlier in game one, it was GW who looked to be on the wrong side of a comeback, as after entering the bottom of the seventh down 6-1, Dartmouth made a game of it. The Big Green got as close as they could without forcing extras or a win in the seventh, scoring four times and loading the bases, but GW prevailed as with two outs, Sophia Torreso struck out the final batter on three-straight swinging strikes.
Five of GW's six runs scored in game one came off the bats of the team's two-way pitcher/utilities, Cece Smith and Emma Fales. First, Smith blasted a three-run home run to center field to add on to GW's already 1-0 lead in the fourth. Then in the top of the seventh, Fales drove a ball off the top of the left-field wall for a two RBI double, giving GW its eventual game-insuring runs. Fales went on to add an RBI and two scoreless innings in the circle in game two, to complete her impactful two-way day.
GW threw all four arms across both games, as Smith and Torreso made the starts and had the bulk of the work. Smith was sturdy vs. Dartmouth, going 5.0 IP with one run allowed off five hits. Torreso was effective in her game-two start after clinching the game-one win, striking out six over 5.0 IP and allowing three earned runs off four hits.
GW had seven hits in both games, led by Cadence Gilliland who accounted for a combined three.
The Revolutionaries return tomorrow for another two games at the Charge on Classic. GW takes on Wagner at 11:00 a.m. before a showdown against UCF at 5:00 p.m., with both games streaming on ESPN+.
