WASHINGTON – Following a thrilling 57-54 overtime victory over Richmond on Wednesday, the George Washington women's basketball team prepares to face another top-level Atlantic 10 opponent on Saturday, traveling to EagleBank Arena to battle George Mason at 3:00 p.m. Live coverage of the matchup will be carried on Monumental Sports Network and ESPN+.
FIRST SINCE 2017
Wednesday night's overtime win marked the first extra-period victory for GW since 2017. GW's last overtime win came against former A-10 member UMass, a 60-54 victory over the Minutewomen in double OT. Since then, GW had been 0-7 in overtime games, including an 83-77 loss to Miami (FL) in the Cayman Islands Classic earlier this season.
The win over the Spiders was also GW's 14th of the year and sixth in A-10 action, both surpassing the GW Revs' win totals from a season ago. Under the guidance of Head Coach Ganiyat Adeduntan, in her first season at GW, the Revolutionaries have shown undeniable growth, contending with the top teams in the conference, none more evident than defeating Richmond on Wednesday, who has made appearances in the NCAA Tournament in consecutive seasons.
ATLANTIC 10 STANDINGS UPDATE
Entering the weekend, GW holds a 6-9 record in the Atlantic 10, currently in a tie with St. Bonaventure for ninth in the conference standings. The Bonnies do hold the tiebreaker over GW, having beaten the Revolutionaries, 54-53, on New Year's Eve. However, the Buff & Blue get a rematch next week, hosting St. Bonaventure on Wednesday, February 25, for Senior Night.
As it stands, GW would receive a first-round bye in the Atlantic 10 Championship, holding a one-game lead over Saint Louis (5-10 in conference play), who is currently in 11th place. Teams that finish in the bottom four (11th-14th) will play on day one of the tournament, while teams that finish as seeds 5-10 will receive a first-round bye. The conference's top four seeds at the end of the regular season will receive the highly coveted double bye, advancing directly to the quarterfinals.
While there are still three games apiece for each team in the regular season, GW's current placement would see them face Loyola Chicago in the second round on March 5, with the winner facing George Mason in the quarterfinals.
SCOUTING THE PATRIOTS
George Mason welcomes GW to Fairfax, sporting an 18-8 overall record and a 13-2 mark in conference play. The Patriots' conference losses came to Richmond (71-57 on Feb. 7) and Rhode Island (79-63 on Feb. 14). George Mason avenged its loss to the Spiders on Feb. 16, winning a defensive battle, 46-37, inside EagleBank Arena.
While George Mason's total defensive numbers aren't eye-popping, the Patriots are elite at defending the three-point line, ranking sixth in Division I in opponent three-point percentage. Opposition is averaging a 25.5% clip from three against George Mason, only behind Bryant, UC Santa Barbara, Eastern Kentucky, Florida Gulf Coast and Baylor.
George Mason's offense is led by Zahirah Walton, who ranks second in the conference in scoring at 17.5 ppg. She's shooting the ball at 41.7% from the floor and averaging 5.6 rebounds per game as well. Kennedy Harris is registering 13.4 ppg and has dished out a team-high 2.3 assists per game.
