Women's Basketball Gets Defining Win of the Coach G Era, Beats Richmond, 57-54

George Washington's women's basketball welcomed Richmond to DC Wednesday, knowing it had a tall task against one of the league's top foes. Richmond came to Foggy Bottom with a 12-2 conference record, good for second in the A-10 with George Mason, and a conference-best #39 national NET ranking. The winners of an NCAA Tournament game a season ago, Richmond also boasted the league's reigning A-10 Player of the Year in Maggie Doogan. In 40 minutes of basketball, GW was their equal. In overtime, George Washington came out on top, 57-54, in the defining win of the season.
Tied at 49 with 18.3 to go after a Gabby Reynolds three-point play, the GW defense dug in for a stop on the final possession of regulation to send the game to an extra session. Mia James got GW the edge in the extra session with a jumper to put the Buff & Blue up two, but Richmond answered with a three on the other end. The teams traded baskets until Sara Lewis put the Revolutionaries ahead, 55-44, with 1:01 to go, then James cashed two free throws with 1.2 seconds to play to give the home team a three-point edge. Inbounding in front of its own bench, Richmond missed a desperation heave at the buzzer, sending GW into celebration.
GW held the league's leading offense to .373 shooting (.185 from deep) and just nine points in each of the first three quarters. GW led by as many as 11 late in the third quarter, before the Spiders returned to form, erupting for 22 in the fourth after being held to 27 points through three. Locking down again in the extra session, the Revolutionaries allowed just two Richmond makes in overtime, sealing the game on defense in the preferred style of Head Coach Ganiyat Adeduntan. Emma Theodorsson made the defensive play of the game with a steal in the waning seconds in transition, which forced the Spider foul on James, who iced it.
Reynolds was the game's best offensive performer with 22 points on 9-of-17 shooting, while committing just two turnovers. The selfless GW Revs allowed Reynolds to get in her groove, as contributions from all eight players who touched the floor were critical in the victory. Lewis' two-way game netted nine points and a game-high seven rebounds, while leading the charge defensively to limit Richmond's clean looks at the rim while keeping the guests off the free-throw line.
The league's top two scorers -- Doogan and Rachel Ullstrom -- shot a combined 9-of-26 from the floor and netted 22 points in the 45 minutes of action, 15 below their combined season average.
The gutsy performance will have the Revolutionaries confident going into Fairfax, Va. Saturday, where the Patriots await a 3 p.m. tip on Monumental Network and ESPN+. Last month, GW gave the defending A-10 Champions a scare at Smith Center in a narrow defeat at home.
