WASHINGTON – Coming on the heels of a thrilling 64-62 win over Saint Louis on Wednesday night, the George Washington women's basketball team returns to action on Sunday, traveling to Dayton for the team's final nationally-televised game of the season. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. inside UD Arena, with live coverage on USA Network.
LEWIS FUELS GW TO VICTORY
After missing last Saturday's win over Fordham due to injury, junior Sara Lewis made her presence felt on Wednesday night against Saint Louis, making plays all over the court and filling up the stat sheet. Lewis finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, four assists and took five charges on the defensive end to fuel GW to a 64-62 home win.
None of her numerous impactful plays were as big as the ones she made in the final minute of action. With GW trailing by a point, Lewis powered the ball inside, tallying three points the old-fashioned way, hitting a layup through contact for an and-one. She followed it up by taking her fifth charge of the night in the closing seconds as SLU looked to tie the game, securing the win for the Buff & Blue. Lewis has been instrumental in GW's success this season, averaging 10.9 points, a team-high 5.6 rebounds per game and shooting the ball at an efficient 45.7% from the floor. She's also an anchor defensively, along with Tanah Becker, routinely drawing the assignment of guarding the opponent's best player.
GETTING IT DONE ON D
GW's growth on the defensive end is undeniable, ranking among the top units in multiple stat categories in the conference. Entering Sunday's matchup with the Flyers, GW ranks second in the conference in opponent field goal percentage at 37.9%. This has translated to the Buff & Blue holding seven different opponents under 50 points this season, including Dayton earlier this year, resulting in a 7-0 record in those instances. GW is also second in the A-10 in total blocks (95) and blocks per game (4.13), only behind Saint Louis, which averages 5.22 a night.
A-10 STANDINGS UPDATE
With a month left in the regular season, GW finds itself in the thick of the A-10 standings. The Buff & Blue hold a 4-6 conference record, placing themselves in a four-way tie with Dayton, La Salle and VCU. GW is also just one win behind Saint Joseph's, Loyola Chicago and Saint Louis, who are all tied for fifth in the conference standings, meaning there is currently just one win separating fifth and 11th. The Revolutionaries will have plenty of opportunities to climb the ranks, playing each of the top five teams in the conference standings in the final eight games of the regular season.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton enters Sunday's nationally televised matchup 10-11 overall and 4-6 in A-10 play following a narrow 75-71 home win over St. Bonaventure on Wednesday night. The Flyers, led by fourth-year Head Coach Tamika Williams-Jeter, traveled to the DMV earlier this season, falling to GW, 54-42, on Dec. 3 inside the Smith Center.
Dayton's offense is led by senior Nayo Lear, who averages 15.1 ppg on 46.9% shooting from the floor. Nicole Stephens puts in 10.0 ppg, the only other Flyer averaging double figures this season. Stephens also leads the program in assists, dishing out 3.6 per contest. Fatima Ibrahim leads the program in rebounding, pulling down 6.7 per game.
