Second Half Rally Comes Up Short for Women’s Basketball

RICHMOND, Va. – Despite a 38-15 deficit at the halftime break, the George Washington women's basketball team didn't go down without a fight. The Revolutionaries outscored host VCU 45-25 in the second half, but the late surge wasn't quite enough in the 63-60 setback.
The first 20 minutes were dominated by the Rams, as they limited GW to just 5-25 from the field and 0-10 from deep in the Revolutionaries' lowest first-half scoring output of the season. Gabby Reynolds tallied six of GW's 15 points, the only member of the Buff & Blue to make multiple field goals during the first two stanzas. On the flip side, VCU finished the half a solid 17-35 from the field, outscoring GW 22-8 in the paint, and outrebounding the Buff & Blue, 28-11.
As she has done multiple times this season, Head Coach Ganiyat Adeduntan made halftime adjustments that worked wonders as GW came alive on both ends of the floor. The Revolutionaries opened up the third quarter on a 19-6 run, aided by eight points from Kamari Sims over that span to get back in the ballgame.
GW continued chipping away at the Rams' lead into the fourth, getting within one point in the waning seconds, but was unable to get over the hump. Sara Lewis led GW offensively, finishing the night with 20 points and eight rebounds. Sims notched 17, all of which came in the second half, while Reynolds recorded 16 points and dished out a team-high four assists. In total, the trio combined for 53 of GW's 60 total points.
Despite potential weather challenges across the East Coast this weekend, GW is still scheduled to host Fordham on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in the Smith Center. Updates regarding potential schedule adjustments will be published on GWsports.com and official GW Women's Basketball social media accounts on Instagram, X and Facebook.
