WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's basketball team returns to action Wednesday, traveling down I-95 to Richmond to face VCU. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
LEWIS CONTINUES TO SHINE
Despite the loss on Saturday to Loyola Chicago, junior Sara Lewis continued her stellar play for GW since the start of conference action. Lewis posted a team-high 15 points to go along with nine rebounds, just missing her third double-double of the season. She was also active defensively, swiping two steals and recording a block against the Ramblers.
Since the start of the traditional A-10 schedule on Dec. 31, Lewis has averaged a team-best 14.8 ppg, including double-figure scoring in GW's last four games. She's also been stellar on the glass, leading GW in rebounds per game over the same stretch at 7.2 per game. Included in that run was her second double-double of the year, a 10-point, 10-rebound night vs. George Mason on Jan. 11.
Lewis is averaging 10.4 ppg on the season, second on the team behind Gabby Reynolds, who's averaging 13.1 ppg. Lewis also leads the team in rebounding this year at 5.4 per game and is shooting the ball at an efficient 45.9% from the floor.
SHORTENING THE BENCH
On Saturday vs. Loyola Chicago, just eight players saw game action, the fewest for the Buff & Blue this season. As GW enters the heart of A-10 play, Head Coach Ganiyat Adeduntan looks to solidify a lineup that has changed throughout the season.
Entering Wednesday's matchup, five players have played in all 20 games for GW this season, with Kamari Sims and Lewis being the only two to start in every game. Tanah Becker, Mia James and Colleen Phiri have each seen action in every contest as well, with Becker leading the group with 18 starts in total. GW has utilized five different starting lineups, with the combination of Sims, Lewis, Reynolds, Becker and Jaeda Wilson the most frequent (12 times). Emma Theodorsson, Mia James and Phiri have all made appearances in the first five as well.
Despite a fairly consistent starting five, GW is still a young squad, with nearly 58% of the team's total minutes being played by first-years and sophomores. Coach G will continue to develop and grow a young roster that looks to make noise in a tough A-10 conference come tournament time in March.
SCOUTING THE RAMS
Led by 12th-year Head Coach Beth O'Boyle, VCU enters the new week 6-13, coming off a 77-47 loss to crosstown foe Richmond on Sunday. The Rams hold an identical 2-5 record in conference play, sporting wins over Duquesne and Saint Louis, while also falling to Rhode Island, George Mason, Saint Joseph's, La Salle and the Spiders.
The Rams rank last in scoring margin this season, losing on average by nine points per contest, while shooting the lowest team percentage from the floor in the conference this season at 36.9%. The Rams are averaging 18.5 turnovers a game, compared to 16.6 for the Buff & Blue.
Offensively, VCU is paced by Mary-Anna Asare, who's averaging 17.4 ppg. The Second Team All-Atlantic 10 selection from a season ago missed nearly all of December before returning for two games around the New Year. She hasn't played since Jan. 4 vs. George Mason. Katarine Knezevi puts in 10.1 ppg and also leads the team in rebounding at 4.7 per game. VCU's full 2025-26 season stats can be found here.
