FAIRFAX, Va. - The Battle of the Georges was renewed on the diamond on Wednesday, and for the first time in three years, there will not be a sweep in the season series. Playing as the visitors in Fairfax, GW fell to George Mason in extra innings in game one, 3-2, before the Revolutionaries imposed their will in game two, winning 8-1. GW moves to 22-11 and continues to lead the A-10 at 9-2.
GW 2, George Mason 3 (8 Innings)
The Revolutionaries were hunting for their seventh-straight win in game one on Wednesday, and it went into extras to decide a winner, but the home Patriots got the best of the Buff & Blue in an eight-inning game one.
Ashley Corpuz was again a bright spot for GW, collecting both Revolutionaries' RBI on a 2-4 day with a pair of singles that both scored Allison Heffley.Â
The Revolutionaries played with a lead for half of the game, scoring first in the top of the first, and GW held the lead until George Mason took over with two in the fourth on a double. Corpuz then tied the game in the fifth, which was the final score until the Patriots claimed the game-winner in the eighth.
Cece Smith made the start and pitched the whole game. Only one of the Patriots' runs came earned, as both runs against Smith in the fourth came with two outs after an error.Â
GW 8, George Mason 1
The Revolutionaries had their feet on the gas from start to finish in game two to clinch a split of Wednesday's doubleheader, 5-1.
George Mason wasn't able to get much going the second time around, as GW's Anna Reed had one of her most complete starts of the season in the circle for GW. Reed went the distance, striking out 10 without yielding a walk. The graduate transfer's only blemish came on a Tess Altevers-Harris solo home run in the fourth - one of just four hits for George Mason in game two.
GW got started early, converting on bases-loaded opportunities in both of the first two innings. In the first, former A-10 All-Rookie Paige Hayward drove a two-out double into left center, scoring both Corpuz and Kaylee Layfield. In the second, Layfield delivered at the plate with a double of her own, scoring Carolyn Skotz and Cadence Gilliland to make it 4-0 GW, but GW wasn't done in the inning, scoring again on a Corpuz sac fly to make it 5-0 early.
GW carried a 5-1 lead into the seventh inning before pouring on another three runs to ensure the victory, highlighted by a two-RBI triple from Carolyn Skotz - her first and GW's fourth triple of the season.Â
The Revolutionaries improved to 9-2 in the A-10 with the split on Wednesday, maintaining the top winning percentage in the A-10 (.818).
