Softball Silenced in Doubleheader at Saint Louis

ST. LOUIS - GW softball fell in both games of Sunday's doubleheader at Saint Louis, 3-0 in game one and 9-0 in game two. GW drops to 23-13 overall and 9-4 in the A-10 ahead of Monday's series finale against the Billikens.Â
GW 0, SLU 3
GW and SLU took a scoreless pitching battle deep into game one, but Saint Louis was first to ignite its offense as it claimed game one from GW, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon.
Two of the best pitchers in the A-10 - GW's Anna Reed and SLU's Taylor Hochman - were sparring with neither willing to budge through four innings. Reed, who had allowed just one hit into the fifth, was the first to give as SLU's Chloe Rhine went deep in the fifth to make it 1-0 GW. The Billikens tacked on their second run unearned after a GW error in the same inning, before driving in their third and final score on a sac fly in the sixth.
GW catcher Allison Heffley extended her hit streak to nine games with a single in the first at-bat of the game, but that was one of just two hits for GW. Carolyn Skotz picked up GW's other hit on a single in the third. Madi Mays, Lilly Travieso and Daniella Lew each reached base once via walks.

Saint Louis catcher Abby Mallo led the Billikens with two home runs and seven RBI as Saint Louis blanked GW, 9-0, in game two.Â
Saint Louis scored four in the third on Mallo's first home run and added five the next inning, which included Mallo's second blast to pass the eight-run threshold. GW needed at least one run in the fifth to keep the game alive, but couldn't bring either of its base runners home.
Three of GW's four hits were doubles, which include one for Kaylee Layfield (11th of the season), Ashley Corpuz (13th of the season) and Emi Todoroki (6th of the season). GW was outhit 9-4 in the contest.
Cece Smith, Chloe Greene and Sophia Torreso each appeared in the circle. Smith made the start and took the loss after 2.1 innings. Greene made her second appearance in A-10 play and gave up five but just one earned.
