Corpuz drives in six runs
WASHINGTON - A brisk and breezy day on the Vern didn't deter a ready Revolutionaries softball team, who claimed both games on Saturday at the GW Invitational. The Revolutionaries got revenge on Manhattan with a 9-4 win, before putting an exclamation on the day when they held on to a 3-2 victory over UAlbany. GW improves to 11-8 overall ahead of the final day of the GW Invitational.Â
GW 9, MANHATTAN 4
GW was looking to draw even against Manhattan after the Jaspers spoiled game one of the GW Invitational on Friday night. Though being outhit 9-8, the Revolutionaries drew 10 walks and were plunked twice, moving the line well all game in a 9-4 win.
GW scored five times total on walks & HBPs with the bases loaded. Their patient approach was evident as Manhattan pitchers threw just shy of 20 pitches per inning. The Revolutionaries left 14 runners on base in the contest, as the offense nearly erupted for more. Kaylee Layfield, Allison Heffley, Ashley Corpuz, Madi Mays, Cadence Gilliland and Carolyn Skotz all reached base multiple times for GW.
In the circle, GW went to a combination of Cece Smith, Chloe Greene and Sophia Torreso. Smith started out hot, striking out six batters in three consecutive 1-2-3 innings to begin the game. The sophomore ran into a bit of trouble with one run against in the fourth and fifth, before making way to Greene and Torreso to finish with a comfortable lead.Â
Corpuz led the Revolutionaries with three RBI, while Skotz came home three times for a team-high in runs scored.
GW 3, UALBANY 2
GW went up against UAlbany in the final game of the day and downed the Great Danes, 3-2, in a low-scoring duel. Corpuz was the catalyst for the Buff & Blue, driving in all three runs in the game.
Corpuz got the game started with her seventh home run of the season, matching her single-season best in long balls. The blast was a two-run shot, scoring Layfield who was hit in her first at-bat.Â
UAlbany wanted no business playing in a deficit and tied the game quickly on a 2-RBI single in the second, but Corpuz was looming and cashed in again not long after. The Ladera Ranch, Calif., native got her third RBI in the third inning on a hard-hit infield single that scored Skotz, as GW regained a 3-2 lead.
GW relied again on a rotation in the circle, using a combination of Anna Reed, Torreso and Smith. Reed made the start and earned the win after going 4.1 innings. After entering the game with one out and the bases loaded in the fifth, Torreso struck out both batters and went 2.0 without allowing a hit. Â
GW was outhit in the contest, 6-5, but drew three walks and was hit twice. Â
