Softball Shuts Down UAlbany in GW Invitational Finale, 5-0

WASHINGTON - Impressive individual performances from junior outfielder Ashley Corpuz and sophomore pitcher Cece Smith propelled the George Washington University softball team to a 5-0 win over UAlbany on Sunday. The Revolutionaries finished the GW Invitational with a 3-1 record, improving to 12-8 through the first 20 games of the season.Â
In the circle, Smith was making quick work of the Great Danes in her second win of the weekend. The Atlanta arm sat down seven UAlbany batters on strikes, while allowing just four hits and one walk in her third complete game of 2025. Smith earned her fifth win of the season, while lowering her ERA to a team-best 2.70.
On the attack, GW was once again led by Corpuz, who accounted for four of GW's five RBI on her fifth-inning grand slam. The home run came with two outs and a 3-2 count, as Corpuz eclipsed her previous single-season record for home runs (7) before GW hits A-10 play. The Ladera Ranch, Calif., product closed out her white-hot weekend with 10 RBI, while going 6-10 with four walks.Â
Madi Mays collected her 13th RBI in the Buff & Blue with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to round out the scoring for GW. Also of note, Daniella Lew secured her first hit of the season in her second official at-bat of 2025.Â
A pair of Buff & Blue milestones were reached in the win. GW Softball Head Coach Chrissy Schoonmaker earned her 92nd win at the helm of the Revolutionaries, moving into second on GW's all-time wins list by a head coach behind Stacey Schramm (2011-2016, 134 wins). Corpuz also rewrote the record books, becoming the first player in GW history to hit three grand slams in a season.Â
The Buff & Blue get one final tune-up this week before conference play begins at home next weekend. The Revolutionaries will travel for their mid-week contest on Wednesday to face Morgan State, with first pitch slated for 2:00 p.m.Â
