GW Invitational starts Friday and runs through Sunday
WASHINGTON - For the first time this season, the George Washington University softball team is spending the weekend playing in DC when the Revolutionaries host UAlbany and Manhattan for the GW Invitational at the GW Softball Field. The GW Invitational is a six-game, round-robin tournament, beginning Friday night as GW officially breaks in the new lights at the GW Softball Field. The GW Invitational schedule, stats and streaming information is available here.Â
REVOLUTIONARIES ROLL CRUSADERS
GW went into Tuesday looking to get back into the green after falling to 7-7 overall last weekend. The Revolutionaries welcomed Holy Cross to the GW Softball Field for the first time ever by shutting out the Crusaders in both games of the doubleheader, winning 3-0 in game one and 4-0 in game two.
THREE-HEADED MONSTER
GW has sent out a similar lineup in each of its 16 games during the 2025 campaign, with eight student-athletes having started every game. Consistent in all of those lineups is a combination of Kaylee Layfield, Ashley Corpuz and Allison Heffley with a guaranteed first-inning at-bat/
The rookie-junior-graduate combination has worked wonders at the top of the order for the Revolutionaries this season. The trio accounts for 56 of GW's 121 hits and 40 of GW's 71 RBI. Batting averages like .372 (Heffley) and .368 (Layfield), and OPSs of .960 (Heffley) and .906 (Layfield) often are team-leading numbers, unless they're eclipsed by a .432 average (Corpuz) and 1.553 OPS (Corpuz) sitting at the top.
LAST WEEKEND OF NON-CONFERENCEÂ
Following the GW Invitational, the Revolutionaries will travel to Baltimore on Tuesday for their final tune-up before A-10 play begins next weekend. GW starts conference play at home with a three-game series against St. Bonaventure on March 15 & 16. GW has the most wins (nine) of any team in the A-10 heading into this weekend.Â
