WASHINGTON - The George Washington University softball team collected a pair of wins Tuesday, shutting out Holy Cross in both games of the midweek doubleheader at the GW Softball Field. The Revolutionaries took game one, 3-0, before earning the sweep in game two, 4-0. GW moves to 3-0 at home and 9-7 overall ahead of this weekend's GW Invitational.
GW 3, Holy Cross 0
Anna Reed collected her fifth win of the season in game one as she pitched a complete game shutout, boosting GW to a 3-0 win.
Reed was excellent in the circle, collecting her second complete game of the campaign. The Harvard transfer matched her season-best with just three hits allowed. Reed sat down seven Crusaders on strikes while limiting Holy Cross to just two walks. GW was sound defensively behind Reed, converting on all 31 defensive opportunities. Â
Offensively, GW was carried by a pair of first-years in Kaylee Layfield and Emi Todoroki who both enjoyed multi-hit performances in game one.
Layfield finished the game 2-3 at the plate with GW's first RBI, which came on a single that drove in Todoroki in the third inning. An inning later, Todoroki came up big again, driving in two runs on an RBI single.
GW 4, Holy Cross 0
Sophia Torreso collected her first win of 2025 in game two, excelling in her third start of the season to lead GW to a 4-0 victory.Â
The sophomore starter was in control all game, limiting Holy Cross to two hits with seven strikeouts over her 5.2 innings. Torreso was pulled for Chloe Greene in the sixth, who earned her first save of the season after keeping a clean sheet for the final four outs.
GW applied the pressure back on Holy Cross quickly in game two. After Ashley Corpuz reached third but failed to score in the first inning, GW kept attacking and took the lead in the second. The Revolutionaries kept a small-ball approach and hit three singles, a double and drew three walks in the frame to go up 3-0. Todoroki and Cadence Gilliland drove in RBI on singles up the middle, before Allison Heffley drew a bases-loaded walk.Â
In the fourth, Madi Mays lofted a sacrifice fly to add protection to GW's edge, which was safe to the finish behind GW's excellent afternoon of pitching.
Combined, Corpuz and Paige Hayward finished with half of GW's hits and runs, each going 2-3 with one run scored. Todoroki also stuffed the stat sheet, going 1-2 with one RBI, one run and one walk.
