HENRICO, Va. – Behind solid showings from Makayla Andrews (14 pts.) and Kamari Sims (13 pts.), the George Washington women's basketball team defeated Loyola Chicago, 65-44, in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship.
Loyola Chicago opened the game with four quick points, capitalizing on the team's first two possessions. This would be the only lead for the Ramblers in the game as GW proceeded to rip off 10 straight points and never relinquished the lead again. The first quarter was highlighted by Andrews, who reached 1,500 career points on a jumper from the free-throw line. The grad transfer from Lafayette averages 11.5 ppg over her 131 career games played.
GW maintained control over much of the first half, never leading by less than seven in the second quarter. After Loyola Chicago trimmed the lead down to six in the third, GW closed the period on a short 5-0 run, then extended that into a 10-0 spurt into the fourth. Sims tallied eight of GW's 10 points in that stretch, knocking down a three-pointer, a layup and getting an and-one at the rim. Sims tallied all 13 of her points in the second half for GW.
Sims' spark off the bench is exactly what GW needed as the team cruised to victory in the fourth. Another factor in GW's success was their domination in the paint. The Buff & Blue outscored LUC 38-18 in the lane, shooting an efficient 66.7% (20-for-30) from two-point range in the game.
GW's defense was stout, limiting the Ramblers to just 27.8% shooting from the floor, the second game in a row GW has kept its opponents under 30% shooting. Along with Andrews and Sims, first-year Gabby Reynolds got into double figures with 12, while Paige Mott tallied eight points and eight rebounds. Andrews was big on the glass for GW, snagging a game-high nine boards.
The Revolutionaries return to the Henrico Sports & Events Center tomorrow, battling fifth-seed Rhode Island in second-round action. Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m. with coverage available on ESPN+.
