WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's basketball team battles Loyola Chicago on Wednesday in the opening round of the 2025 Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship. Tip-off is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at the Henrico Sports & Events Center, with live coverage available on ESPN+.
ENDING THE SEASON IN STYLE
GW snapped a four-game skid on Saturday afternoon, defeating Rhode Island, 54-46, in the team's regular-season finale. The win was also GW's first against the Rams since the 2019-20 season, snapping a four-game losing streak to Rhody. The win is GW's 45th against Rhode Island all-time, moving the series to a 45-10 advantage for the Buff & Blue.
Makayla Andrews led the way offensively for GW, scoring a team-high 15 points. Paige Mott was a force on the block, putting in 13 points and grabbing seven boards. Sara Lewis also got into double-figures with 11, while matching Mott's carrom total with seven. Arguably the biggest story of the day was GW's defense which held Rhode Island to just 27.7% shooting from the floor. It marked the seventh time this season GW has kept an opponent under 50 points, going a perfect 7-0 in those contests.
ANDREWS ON THE CUSP OF HISTORY
Following her 15-point performance against Rhode Island, Andrews sits just three points shy of 1,500 for her career. The grad transfer from Lafayette has led the Buff & Blue in scoring this season, averaging 11.5 ppg in 28 games played.
Andrews accumulated 1,176 points in her four years at Lafayette, leading the program in scoring her junior and senior seasons. The 5-10 guard averages 11.5 ppg over her 130 career games played, shooting the ball at a combined 40.8% from the floor.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
GW received the 12 seed in the Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship, slotting themselves in the #12 vs. #13 game on day one of the tournament. GW will face Loyola Chicago for the third time this year after splitting with the Ramblers in the regular season. The road team emerged victorious in both contests, with GW earning the most recent win on Feb. 12. The Revolutionaries held LUC to just eight points in the first half, securing a 53-41 win in the Windy City.
Rhode Island awaits the winner of Wednesday's game after receiving a first-round bye. The second-round matchup is set for Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in the second game of session three in Henrico, Va. The full bracket can be found on the A-10's tournament homepage here.
SCOUTING THE RAMBLERS
Entering with a 13-16 overall record and a 5-13 mark in conference action, Loyola Chicago rides a two-game win streak into the tournament after defeating VCU and Saint Louis to conclude the regular season. After joining the Atlantic 10 prior to the 2022-23 academic year, LUC has managed to win just one postseason contest, defeating Fordham, 53-52, in last season's tournament before falling to Richmond, the eventual conference champions. Allison Guth is in her third season as Head Coach of the program, amassing a 34-56 record during her time in Chicago. The Illinois grad holds a 133-130 overall record in nine seasons as a head coach after leaving Yale for LUC in 2022.
The Ramblers are the only team in the A-10 without a player averaging double figures in scoring. Naelle Bernard and Emma Theodorsson lead the Ramblers offense at 9.6 ppg each, while Theordorsson also leads the program in rebounding at 4.3 a night. Kira Chivers leads the team in assists, dishing out 3.0 a game, while Bernard sits just behind in second at 2.2.
