Neither team tallied a run through the first two innings of play, but GW broke the scoreless tie in the home half of the third. First-year Charlie Walsh put GW on the scoreboard, ripping a double down the left-field line to score Ty Acker from second base. During the next at-bat, Kobe Mentzer scored from third base on a wild pitch, doubling GW's lead to 2-0. Sam Gates put a cap on the inning with a double to center field, bringing home Walsh to make GW's advantage 3-0.
After UMBC put up four combined runs over the fifth and sixth innings, GW bounced back with four more of its own in the seventh to retake the lead. Charlie Rogan got the inning started with a double down the right field line, his second two-bagger of the day, to score Gates and tie the game at four. Later in the inning, Ellis Schwartz reached on a fielder's choice that scored Rogan from third. Schwartz hit a dribbler to the first baseman, who then threw home to try and cut down Rogan, but he beat the throw to the plate to give GW the lead for good. Robbie Lavey gave GW two insurance runs on a single through the right side, making the score 7-4 GW.
Matt Bruno locked down the save for GW, his first of the season, after entering in the eighth inning. Bruno is now 2-0 on the year and has one save in five appearances. Graham Jeffries earned his second start of the season for GW, tossing three hitless innings for the Buff & Blue. Cade Davis was credited with the victory, his first of the season, after throwing two scoreless innings of work in the sixth and seventh.
Offensively, Rogan and Gates both finished with two hits and an RBI apiece. Lavey notched one hit and two RBI, while Walsh recorded a hit, RBI and a run scored.
GW makes the short trip to Annapolis tomorrow to face Navy at 3:00 p.m., before returning to Tucker Field this weekend for a three-game series with Fairfield. First pitch for Friday's series opener is slated for 2:30 p.m.
