Carolyn Skotz delivers four RBI performance in game two
AMHERST, Mass. - The George Washington University softball team split Saturday's doubleheader at UMass. The Revolutionaries were quieted in a 3-1 loss in game one, before coming back to outlast the Minutewomen in a 10-inning 6-3 win in game two. GW moves to 17-10 overall and 4-1 in the A-10 ahead of tomorrow's series finale. Â
GW 1, UMass 3
GW was looking to stay perfect in conference play, but UMass instead collected its first A-10 win as the Minutewomen claimed game one, 3-1.
UMass jumped on the Buff & Blue from the start, scoring twice in the first inning on an Odyssey Torres two-RBI double. The runs captured momentum for UMass as the home side scored quickly after the game had resumed following a lengthy delay to address field conditions in the circle.Â
The score held until the fourth, when GW cut the lead in half on an Emi Todoroki sacrifice fly that scored Carolyn Skotz from third. The run ended up being GW's only score of the game, while UMass matched the Revolutionaries with a run of its own in the fourth to extend its lead to 3-1.
Cece Smith made the start for GW and was charged with all three runs after going 3.0 innings. Sophia Torreso took over in relief in the fourth, and pitched the remaining 3.0 innings, giving up no runs on just two hits.Â
Paige Hayward had multiple hits for GW, while Madi Mays knocked an extra-base hit on a double and Ashley Corpuz, Skotz and Cadence Gilliland had GW's remaining base hits. GW was held without a walk for the first time in 14 games.
GW 6, UMass 3 (10 innings)Â
A similar fate looked imminent for GW, down 3-1 in the fourth, but the Revolutionaries clawed level with runs in the fifth and sixth innings and battled their way to a 6-3 win in 10 innings.Â
Skotz was the story offensively for the Buff & Blue, driving in four runs in big moments for the visitors. Skotz got GW on the board on a single in the fourth, before driving in the game-tying run on a single in the sixth, and claiming the eventual game-winner on a two-RBI double in the 10th.
Chloe Greene was credited with the win - her second of the season - after holding UMass scoreless over 1.2 innings to close out the game. Greene had relieved Torreso, who made her second quality relief appearance of the day with no runs allowed and one hit over 3.1 innings. Anna Reed made the start for GW and went 5.0 with three runs allowed (two earned). The Minutewomen got 10 hits off Reed, but the graduate student pitched well situationally to limit the damage.Â
UMass left runners on base in all three extra innings, as Torreso and Greene came through for the Revolutionaries with their backs against the wall on multiple occasions.
The teams combined for 23 runners left on base, as both offenses were active.
