Revolutionaries out to best start in A-10 play since 2022
AMHERST, Mass. - The George Washington University softball team claimed the series finale against UMass with a 3-2 road victory on Sunday. GW improved to 5-1 in the A-10 and 18-10 overall, as it won its second A-10 series in as many tries.
Anna Reed made the start for the Revolutionaries and earned her team-best eighth win of the season. Reed was in command, allowing just one hit through four innings as the Minutewomen struggled to put anything together at the start of the game. The veteran pitcher struck out five, but was replaced after UMass scored twice in the fifth. Cece Smith closed up shop with two consecutive 1-2-3 innings to secure the one-run win and her first save of the year.
First-year infielder Kaylee Layfield came through in a big way, driving in each of GW's first two runs. The Revolutionaries shot ahead to a 1-0 lead on the second at-bat of the game on a Layfield double that scored Allison Heffley. GW then went ahead 2-0 in the third when Layfield launched her second home run of the season, a solo shot to left-center.
In the fourth, Emi Todoroki scored GW's third and final run on a double into the left-center gap, scoring Lilly Travieso from first.Â
GW outhit UMass, 7-3, as both teams tightened up after a combined 24 hits in game two.Â
At 5-1 in the A-10, GW is out to its best start in conference play since a 6-0 start in 2022. The Buff & Blue return for four games at the GW Softball Field this week, beginning on Wednesday vs. UMES (2:00 p.m.).
