Heffley highlights with two triples, three RBI and two runners caught stealing
WASHINGTON - The George Washington University softball team won its third-consecutive game on Wednesday, downing UMES, 6-0, on home field. The Revolutionaries improved to 19-10 ahead of their third A-10 series of the season this weekend against Dayton.Â
Graduate catcher Allison Heffley, batting first, as GW's top three batters continued to shuffle on Wednesday, dazzled in the win, going 3-4 with her first two triples of the season. Heffley gathered three RBI and one run scored, while also leading GW's efforts on defense, collecting seven putouts and three assists, including a pair of runners caught trying to steal second base.
Starting pitcher Chloe Greene had a quality performance for the Buff & Blue, throwing a complete game in her second start of the season and earning her third win since transferring to GW. Greene's mix worked all game as she struck out seven batters and walked none. Greene limited UMES to just four base runners on three hits and one HBP, leaving the bases abandoned for most of the game.
GW took the lead on a Heffley RBI single in the second, before Ashley Corpuz stepped up to smack her team-best 11th home run of the season, a no-doubter to center field. Corpuz moved into a tie for eighth on GW's single-season home runs list (11), chasing the record 20 hit by Jenna Cone in 2019. Â
The Revolutionaries rounded out their day on offense with a Kaylee Layfield RBI sac fly in the fourth, followed by a three-run fifth inning, helped by a UMES defensive miscue. Daniella Lew was the first to score in the fifth, coming all the way home from first base on a single to right that rolled by the right fielder and to the wall. Heffley then claimed the final two RBI on her second triple of the game.
Emi Todoroki (3-4), Heffley (3-4) and Corpuz (2-3) each had multi-hit outings. Madi Mays (1-2) reached base three times on one hit and two walks.
Up next is a battle between two first-place teams in the A-10, as Dayton pays a visit to the GW Softball Field for a three-game set this weekend. First pitch on Saturday (doubleheader) and Sunday is set for 12:00 p.m., and Sunday's game will air on ESPN+. Fans are invited to Feel The Vern at a pregame tailgate starting at 11:30 a.m.
