Cece Smith and Anna Reed hold Dayton to two total hits
WASHINGTON - The George Washington University softball team clinched the series vs. Dayton on Saturday, sweeping the Flyers in both games of Saturday's doubleheader at the GW Softball Field. The Revolutionaries improved to 21-10 and 7-1 in the A-10 ahead of the series finale tomorrow.
GW 2, Dayton 0
GW Head Coach Chrissy Schoonmaker reached the 100 career win mark in game one as the Buff & Blue silenced Dayton, 2-0.
Allison Heffley's third home run of the season proved to be enough vs. Dayton in game one, as GW held the Flyers scoreless behind a one-hit complete game start from sophomore Cece Smith.
Smith was sensational in the circle, spinning and mixing pitches to near perfection in her seventh win of the season. The Atlanta product sat down eight Flyers on strikes in game one, while holding Dayton to just one hit, which didn't come until the fourth inning. Only two Flyers reached base all game (one hit, one HBP) as Smith set the tone for the series.
Heffley's home run was a solo shot to right-center field in GW's first at-bat. GW's only other run of the game was scored on an Emi Todoroki sacrifice fly in the third.Â
Heffley and Kaylee Layfield, who was batting second, combined for four of GW's six hits in the first two spots. Â
GW 4, Dayton 1Â
The Revolutionaries clinched the series in game two as GW's pitching and defense dominated again, holding Dayton to one hit for the second-consecutive game.
Anna Reed made the start and earned her team-best ninth win, going 5.1 before allowing a hit. Reed recorded four strikeouts and allowed two walks, forcing soft contact to keep Dayton quiet. Reed was then replaced by Smith in the sixth after allowing her first hit, and Smith continued her dominance from game one, securing the final five outs without giving up a hit and picking up her team-leading third save.
Dayton scored first in game two, capitalizing on a first-and-third double steal to go up 1-0 in the first inning. It didn't take GW long to get back in the game though, scoring three in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-1 lead. Corpuz, Madi Mays and Todoroki drove in the early runs, helped by a Flyers' fielding error.Â
Neither team had a baserunner between the second and fifth innings, but in the sixth, GW extended its lead on a Mays' sac fly.
