GW has won 13 of its last 15 games and holds sole possession of first place in the A-10
WASHINGTON - The George Washington University softball team completed a late comeback on Sunday, defeating Dayton, 5-4, after trailing 4-0 in the fifth. Ashley Corpuz powered the comeback and tied the game with four RBI on a pair of home runs, before Emi Todoroki sent the Buff & Blue home with a win on a walk-off double. The Revolutionaries improved to 22-10, and now hold sole possession of first place in the A-10 at 8-1.
The lead was four in the fifth inning for a Flyer team that was looking to salvage the series finale. Dayton held GW to just two hits in the first four innings and looked to be in control, but when Corpuz is in the lineup for GW, anything is possible.
An Allison Heffley single led off the fifth, and Kaylee Layfield followed by taking a pitch off her hand for a free base to set up Corpuz's first blast. The home run, Corpuz's 12th of the season, was crushed to straight-away center field and brought GW to within one run.
Still trailing by one with three outs to play in regulation, Corpuz hit her second home run of the game on the first at-bat of the home seventh to bring GW level. The ball was again hit to straight-away center, but this time it just barely scraped over the wall for her 13th home run of the season. Then with the game tied and still just one out, Madi Mays drove a hard ball to left-center for a double to set up Todoroki, who then also doubled, scoring Daniella Lew (pinch running for Mays) for the game-clinching run.
Anna Reed claimed the win as GW's third pitcher of the game. Reed was inserted in the seventh and kept GW in the fight with a 1-2-3 inning. Cece Smith made the start and went 3.0 with four runs and six hits against. Sophia Torreso bridged the two and hurled a quality three innings, giving up just two hits and allowing zero runs.Â
With her two home runs, Corpuz is now tied for fourth on GW's single-season home runs chart (13), now only trailing three separate Jenna Cone seasons: her record 20 home runs in 2019, 18 home runs in 2017 and 17 home runs in 2021.
GW is off to its best start in A-10 play since starting 9-0 in 2022, when GW finished 21-3 in the A-10 and finished as A-10 Regular Season Champions. Â
GW is on the road for the next six games, starting Wednesday with a mid-week A-10 doubleheader at George Mason. First pitch in Fairfax is set for 2 p.m., and both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
