Schwartz’s Historic Day Delivers Baseball Over Maine

GW's day started rocky, with the Black Bears posting seven runs through the first three innings of play. Trailing by a touchdown, the Buff & Blue put up its first run of the day in the bottom of the third off an RBI double from Charlie Rogan.
The bats came alive for the home team in the fourth, registering three more runs in the frame to knock the deficit down to 7-4. Conlon Walker got the scoring started with an RBI double to right field that scored Schwartz. Later in the inning, Charlie Walsh and Sam Gates each notched an RBI as well, with Gates' coming via an infield single to the shortstop.
In the fifth, GW continued to trim into the Maine lead, putting up two more runs to make it 7-6. Robbie Lavey scored the first of the inning off a sacrifice fly to score Schwartz, who reached on a triple earlier in the inning. Walker came up clutch for the GW Revs, tallying his second double of the day for the team's sixth run.
After Maine tacked on two more in the sixth, GW had an immediate answer with two more of their own. Jude Clough ripped a two-RBI single to left-center, scoring Cristino Tufano and Gates, once again bringing GW within one at 9-8.
In the bottom of the eighth, Schwartz stepped up to the plate just a homer shy of the single. He'd recorded a double in the second, a bunt single in the fourth and his aforementioned triple in the fifth. On a 1-0 count, Schwartz hit a towering shot to left-center, landing just left of the batter's eye for his third home run of the season and his first collegiate cycle. The two-run blast gave GW its first lead of the day at 10-9, with just three outs away from securing the sweep.
Andrew Cutler was called upon out of GW's bullpen for the ninth, making quick work of the Black Bears after giving up a leadoff single. The save is Cutler's first of the season and the third of his GW career. Matt Bruno earned the win after tossing two scoreless innings. He moves to 2-0 on the young season.
Along with Schwartz, who tallied two RBI and three runs scored in his standout day, Walker was also phenomenal with a three-hit performance. He notched two RBI as well and scored one run. Clough and Gates each finished with two hits apiece, while Gates scored two runs and recorded an RBI.
GW returns to The Tuck on Tuesday, concluding the team's eight-game homestand with a 2:30 p.m. matchup with UMBC. The contest will be aired live on ESPN+.
