CLINTON, S.C. - The George Washington University softball team improved to 3-1 on the season on Saturday, besting Morehead State in a rematch from Friday, 7-3, before spoiling home field for Presbyterian with a 4-2 victory.
GW 7, Morehead State 3
Going for its second win in as many days against Morehead State, the Revolutionaries fell behind early, but relied on late-game heroics to secure a 7-3 victory.
The Eagles scored all three of their runs by the top of the second inning. GW then narrowed the deficit to one in the bottom of the second after RBIs from Kaylee Layfield and Allison Heffley. Still trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Revolutionaries turned to Corpuz to provide a spark, smashing a two-out solo home run to tie the game. Still tied an inning later, the Revolutionaries took advantage of a pair of Eagles' errors and loaded the bases, bringing up the hot bat of Corpuz again with two outs. Corpuz delivered in the clutch and hit a grand slam to left field, blowing open a four-run lead, which was enough for GW to take to the finish line.Â
The top of GW's lineup, from Layfield to Heffley to Corpuz, drove in all seven runs and were responsible for five of GW's eight hits. Sophia Torreso made the start for GW, turning it over to Chloe Greene in the fourth inning, and eventually to Cece Smith in the sixth inning.
GW 4, Presbyterian 2
Playing as the visitors on the Blue Hose's turf, the Revolutionaries were eyeing a perfect Saturday as they squared up against the hosts. Early Revolutionaries' runs and a quality performance from GW starting pitcher Anna Reed helped the effort as the GW Revs rolled to a 4-2 win.Â
Reed, starting her second game in as many days, was excellent in the circle, finishing five innings and punching out nine with just two earned runs against. As Reed was making good work of the Blue Hose, the Revolutionaries' offense found its legs early and scored all four runs in the first four innings. Paige Hayward drove in two in the first before Carolyn Skotz and Kaylee Layfield got in on the action with one RBI apiece in the second and fourth innings, respectively.
The Blue Hose looked to draw even with runners on second and third in the last of the seventh, but Smith, who was pitching in relief of Reed, shut the door to secure victory.Â
