WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's basketball team travels to Rhode Island on Saturday to face the Rams for the team's regular-season finale. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 p.m. with live coverage on ESPN+.
A-10 STANDINGS ENTERING THE FINAL WEEKEND
Entering the final day of play, GW sits in a tie with Loyola Chicago for the 12-seed in the A-10 standings. Both programs hold a 4-13 record in conference play and are locked into playing each other in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship in the #12 vs. #13 game. Neither team can catch VCU (6-11 in conference) for the 11-seed or fall behind La Salle and St. Bonaventure (2-15 in conference) with one game left.
Loyola holds the tiebreaker in the scenario that both teams finish with the same record due to a higher winning percentage against common opponents. The scenario in which GW gets the 12-seed would require a win at Rhode Island this weekend and an LUC loss against Saint Louis.
The winner of Wednesday's first-round matchup will move on to face the tournament's fifth seed. Rhode Island currently occupies that spot in the standings, with the possibility for Massachusetts, Davidson or Saint Joseph's to land in that spot as well. The official A-10 Women's Basketball Championship seedings and bracket will be published Saturday night following the finish of all games on the tournament's homepage here.
SCOUTING THE RAMS
Rhode Island holds a 16-14 overall record and an 11-6 mark in conference play entering Saturday's matchup. The Rams, led by sixth-year Head Coach Tammi Reiss, lost their midweek matchup with Saint Louis on Wednesday, falling to the Billikens, 67-63. Prior to that game at SLU, Rhode Island had won five of its previous six, with notable victories over Saint Joseph's, Dayton and Duquesne. Rhode Island's defense is stout, holding opponents to just 55.8 points a game, which leads the conference. Part of the success is due to the Rams' ability to limit opponents to one shot, with the third-best rebounding average (38.9 rpg) of any team in the conference and the highest rebounding margin (+8.1) in the league.
Harsimran Kaur leads the Rams' offense this season at 12.4 ppg on 40.3% shooting from the floor. Kaur is also second on the team in rebounding at 7.6 a night while shooting a stellar 84.7% from the charity stripe this season. Sophie Phillips puts in 9.9 ppg, while Anaelle Dutat averages 7.5 points and a team-best 7.9 boards a game. Sophia Vital dishes out 4.1 assists per game, which ranks first on the team and sixth in the conference.
