KINGSTON, R.I. – Behind stout defense that held URI to just 27.7% shooting from the floor, the George Washington women's basketball team picked up a 54-46 road victory over Rhode Island on the final day of the regular season. The Buff & Blue now turn their attention to the Atlantic 10 Championship, which begins on Wednesday in Henrico, Va.
Neither team came out of the gates firing on offense, as the Rams scored just nine points through the game's first 10 minutes. The Revolutionaries were unable to take advantage, however, only registering 11 points of their own in the first quarter.
Scoring remained hard to come by in the second as GW held a narrow 24-20 lead at the halftime break. The Rams shot just 21.9% from the floor in the first 20 minutes, compared to 40% for the Revolutionaries.
After a back-and-forth third quarter, GW opened up its biggest lead of the game early in the fourth, leading the Rams by 12 with just over nine minutes remaining. Rhode Island whittled the deficit down to just three on multiple occasions down the stretch, but GW hit clutch free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
Makayla Andrews led GW's offense with 15 points on the day, while Paige Mott finished with 13 points and seven boards. Sara Lewis, who played all 40 minutes for GW, put up 11 points and also grabbed seven rebounds. Mott and Lewis were both factors on the defensive end of the floor, recording three and two blocks, respectively.
GW now awaits the announcement of the 2025 Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship bracket to determine its next opponent. The Revolutionaries will play on Wednesday, March 5, the opening day of the postseason tournament. Follow GWsports.com for the latest on the A-10 Basketball Championship.
