WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's basketball team is set to welcome area schools to the Charles E. Smith Center on Wednesday for the program's annual School Day. The Revolutionaries will host Massachusetts at noon for the final matchup as conference foes ahead of the Minutewomen's move to the Mid-American Conference this summer. Coverage of the matinee clash will be available on ESPN+.
HONORING THE SENIORS
On Sunday, the GW women's basketball program honored the four graduating members of its 2024-25 team. Maxine Engel, Paige Mott, Makayla Andrews and Mariona Planes Fortuny were all celebrated for their athletic and academic accomplishments prior to tip-off against Davidson.
Andrews, Mott and Planes Fortuny all arrived at GW as graduate transfers following successful four-year careers. Engel is the lone four-year senior of the bunch, having spent her entire career with the Buff & Blue. She appeared in 83 games for GW, starting in 38. Engel has amassed over 350 career points with the GW Revs and nearly 200 career rebounds. The long-range threat has also connected on over 50 career three-pointers as well.
A-10 STANDINGS UPDATE
With two games left in the regular season, GW ranks 12th in the Atlantic 10 with a 4-12 conference record. As the standings currently sit, GW would battle Loyola Chicago on day one of the 2025 Atlantic 10 Basketball Championship in the #12 vs. #13 matchup. That contest is slated to take place at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 5, with the winner facing the fifth seed in the bracket.
GW and the Ramblers split their two meetings this season, with the road team prevailing in both matchups. Loyola Chicago got the better of GW on Jan. 5, a tight 67-63 victory. However, the Revolutionaries got revenge on Feb. 12 in the windy city, downing LUC, 53-41. GW held Loyola to just eight first-half points, the lowest total the Buff & Blue have allowed in a half this season.
SCOUTING THE MINUTEWOMEN
Led by second-year head coach Mike Leflar, Massachusetts makes its final trip to the Smith Center as a conference foe with a 15-13 overall record and a 10-7 mark in A-10 action. The Minutewomen dropped a close 42-40 matchup with Rhode Island over the weekend, putting a damper on the program's senior day celebration. UMass is 6-4 in its last 10 games, alternating wins and losses in the last six.
Megan Olbrys leads the team in scoring this season at 13.9 ppg. She's also tops in rebounding at 8.2 rpg and leads the program with a 53.7% mark from the field. Yahmani McKayle sits just behind at 13.2 ppg, while Allie Palmieri is barely into double figures at 10.1 ppg. Stefanie Kulesza makes a big impact on the glass for UMass, grabbing 6.8 rpg.
