RICHMOND, Va. – Matching up against league-leading Richmond has been a challenge for many teams this season, but the George Washington women's basketball team gave them a run for their money on Wednesday night. After leading at halftime, the Buff & Blue couldn't hold on down the stretch, dropping the contest, 67-57.
In a season where consistent scoring has been a challenge at times for GW, the buckets were falling early, trading blows with Richmond's offense throughout the first quarter. The teams shot a combined 11-26 (42.3%) from the floor, with the game squarely tied at 14 apiece after the first 10 minutes.
The second quarter was the Kamari Sims show as the sophomore rained three triples in the frame and four overall in the first half to lead all scorers at the halftime break. All three of Sims' trifectas came late in the third as she connected on three possessions in a row, tallying nine points in just over 1:15. Junior Filipa Calisto capitalized on a three-pointer or her own on the ensuing possession, giving GW four-straight trips with a deep ball to end the half and earning the GW Revs a 35-34 lead at the break.
Despite GW's best effort, the Spiders' offense was too much as they slowly pulled away in the second half. The Revolutionaries managed to get within one point early in the fourth quarter, but the reigning A-10 champs closed out the game on a 12-3 run to secure the win.
Sims led the GW offense with 15 points, all coming on three-pointers. She finished just one point shy of her career high, set last season against UMass. Makayla Andrews recorded 13 points and five boards, while Gabby Reynolds and Calisto both added 10.
The Revolutionaries return to the Smith Center Sunday for the team's final weekend home game of the season. GW will celebrate Senior Day, with pregame festivities slated to begin 15 minutes prior to the game's noon tip. The program will also welcome back alumnae to campus as part of the team's Alumni Day celebration.
