Women’s Basketball Rallies to Down Brown, 53-48

WASHINGTON - In the opening game on Hall of Fame Weekend at GW, when the university is also celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Charles E. Smith Center, women's basketball entertained Brown in front of new Hall of Famer Jessica Adair, GW's first WNBA Champion. Four members of the first George Washington team to play in the Smith Center 50 years ago were also on hand, reveling in their program's fourth win in its last five games in the Brown takedown.
After spotting the Bears an 11-0 lead, George Washington clawed its way all the way back, setting the stage for a thrilling finish.
Tied at 46 with under two minutes to play, super soph Gabby Reynolds netted one-of-two freebies to give GW a 47-46 lead, then after a stop on the end, she canned two more to extend the Revolutionaries' lead to three.
Brown had a clean look for a would-be game-tying three from the top of the key with just over 20 ticks remaining, and after it rimmed away, the Bears retained possession after a GW foul.
First-year Mia James then made the defensive play of the game, forcing a tie-up with possession favoring GW to get the ball back, up three in the closing seconds. A flurry of fouls with the shot clock off forced the Revolutionaries to handle the ball cleanly and inbound successfully, and the team was up to the task to salt away the win.
Reynolds finished with a team-high 20 points, making a strong case for A-10 Player of the Week honors, with five rebounds, three steals and two assists alongside.
Her scoring day only trailed Brown's Grace Arnolie, from nearby Vienna, Virginia, who finished with 21 points, but just five came in the second half after a sterling shutdown effort by Sara Lewis flummoxed Arnolie late.
The season treks on for the red-hot GW Revs next at Delaware on Wednesday at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
