Women's Basketball Stays Hot, Wins A-10 Opener vs. Dayton, 54-42
12/3/2025 8:51:00 PM | Women's Basketball
WASHINGTON - With A-10 women's basketball taking a break from non-conference action for each team to play an early-season conference opener, George Washington welcomed Dayton to DC on Wednesday night, with the traditional Atlantic 10 rivals looking to get a leg up in conference play in December.
As winners of two of its last three - with the lone setback being an OT contest against Miami - GW stayed hot against the Flyers in a game it largely controlled from the jump, to get to 1-0 in conference play and within a game of .500 at 4-5 overall. Perhaps inspired by George Washington Hall of Famer Cathy Joens sitting courtside, it was a vintage display for the historic program.
As she's done of late, sophomore star Gabby Reynolds was superlative in GW's 12-point win, racking up a game-high 21 points to make it 66 points total in the Revolutionaries' last three contests (22.0 ppg). Sara Lewis similarly shined with a double-double of 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, but the defense was the true star. The GW D held Dayton's leading scorer scoreless, Nayo Lear, who came into the action averaging 16.6 points per game, but couldn't get it going as George Washington's focus was to limit her touches all night, leading to just three field goal attempts.
Dayton was averaging more than 69 points per prior to tonight, but ran into a George Washington buzzsaw that grounded the Flyers to the tune of .340 shooting on the night, including just 3-of-15 (.200) from long range. The Revolutionaries also forced 18 Dayton turnovers, leading to 16 points on the other end, doubling up the visitors 16-8 in points off turnovers.
The lone quarter that GW allowed more than 10 points was the third (14), before the defense clamped down once again late as the Flyers saw the ball go through the net just four times in the final stanza (4-of-13 FG, 1-of-3 3pt. FG, 0-2 FT).
The GW Revs will look to make it four out of five Saturday when Brown visits Foggy Bottom in the team's return to non-conference action for the next five games. Tip-off vs. the Bears comes at 1 p.m. live on ESPN+.
