Women's Basketball Celebrates a Legend, Tops Northwestern 75-62

WASHINGTON - In the story arc of George Washington women's basketball, Saturday, December 21st, will have its own chapter. As the first season of the Ganiyat Adeduntan Era at GW has been all about celebrating the program's unparalleled history at George Washington, the narrative wouldn't have been complete without honoring the man who paved the way. In a matinee in Foggy Bottom, the university community did exactly that with Joe McKeown in town with his Northwestern Wildcats. After a banner was hung honoring McKeown's 441 career wins at GW - the most in university history for any coach in any sport - eras clashed and Coach G's won, 75-62.
When the Hall of Fame coach McKeown retires at the end of the season, the ledger will show a 441-154 (.741) record coaching GW, and an 0-1 record coaching against George Washington, as the Revolutionaries enjoyed their first win against Power 4 Conference foe since topping Wisconsin in November, 2017. The win also moved the team's winning-streak to six, the longest such run since the A-10 championship season of 2016-17.
Fittingly, it came against a man who's no stranger to success in DC, as under his guidance GW made 15 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including four bids to the Sweet Sixteen and a trip to the Elite Eight in 1996-97. Now, as Coach G makes every attempt to honor and celebrate the past, the Foggy Bottom faithful have every reason to believe that history can and will repeat itself.
Sophomore star Gabby Reynolds, making a claim once again for her first career A-10 Player of the Week honor, had a game-high 21 points as her hot streak continues. Reynolds had plenty of help too against the Big 10 foe with Emma Theodorsson, a Loyola Chicago transfer playing against former Citymates, coming off the bench to register 16 points and a game-high tying eight rebounds in just 22 minutes of action. She hit a pair of threes as GW effectively shot over the top of the Wildcat zone to the tune of a .444 mark from deep, while also attacking it to get quality looks inside with 30 points in the paint. First-year Colleen Phiri was critical to her team's interior effort, as she netted 10 against the bigger 'Cats, unafraid to attack the hoop.
GW now takes the week off before returning to the Smith Center a week from now, December 28th, for the non-conference finale against Coppin State. Tip time against the Eagles comes at 2 p.m. live on ESPN+.
