WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's basketball team aims for its fifth-consecutive win on Sunday, hosting American for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off. Live coverage of the matchup will be carried on ESPN+.
STRIVING FOR FIVE
Wednesday's win over Delaware was the fourth-consecutive win for GW, the most in a row since the Buff & Blue won five-straight in 2022-23. After starting the season slowly, GW has seemingly found its groove, limiting opponents to just 54.0 ppg over this four-game stretch. On the flip side, GW's offense is averaging 62.8 ppg during this same run, outscoring opponents on average by 8.8 ppg.
One of the key factors in GW's recent success has been its ability to take care of the basketball. Through GW's first seven games of the season, the Buff & Blue averaged 18.6 turnovers per contest, equating to a 2-5 record over that span. Over the past four games, GW has cut that number down to just 12.5 turnovers per game, including a season-low eight against Brown last Saturday.
A win on Sunday equals GW's mark of five in a row set in 2022-23. The program hasn't won six-consecutive games since the 2016-17 campaign, the same season as GW's most-recent regular season Atlantic 10 Championship.
LEWIS SHINES VS. THE BLUE HENS
Junior Sara Lewis was stellar in GW's win over Delaware on Wednesday, pouring in a career-high 22 points on 8-14 shooting from the field. It topped her previous career-best of 16, set last season against George Mason.
Lewis was brilliant from the jump, scoring 10 of GW's 18 points in the first quarter, aiding GW to an early advantage that the team never gave back. After taking a 5-2 lead with 7:02 left in the first quarter, the Revolutionaries led the rest of the way, much to the thanks of Lewis' 6-6 performance at the free-throw line, coming in clutch down the stretch.
In her junior season, Lewis is averaging 9.4 points a night, second-most on GW thus far. She's also grabbing 4.6 rebounds a game, which is second in the program, while shooting an efficient 42.5% from the floor and 82.9% from the free throw line. Lewis, along with fellow junior Kamari Sims, are the lone Revolutionaries to start in all 11 games for GW this year.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
American enters the weekend 1-7 overall, having lost seven in a row following a season-opening win against Delaware State. The Eagles, who finished 1-29 a season ago, are under the direction of first-year Head Coach Kelly Killion, who took over the program following an 11-year stint at the University of Pennsylvania. While at Penn, Killian served as the associate head coach for three years and the program's recruiting coordinator over her entire tenure.
On the court, the Eagles are led by Molly Driscoll, who's averaging 13.8 ppg. She's shooting 41.0% from the floor while also grabbing 2.6 rebounds a night. Charlotte Tuhy is leading the program with 11.6 rebounds per game, the only player to average more than three rebounds per game. Tuhy is also averaging 9.9 ppg and dishing out 2.0 assists per game.
