WASHINGTON – Following a dominant 86-47 win over UDC on Monday night, the George Washington women's basketball team returns to the court Friday, traveling to Philly to battle Temple in the team's first road game of the 2025-26 season. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m., with live coverage carried on ESPN+.
PHIRI, JAMES SHINE IN COLLEGIATE DEBUT
If there were first-game jitters on Monday night inside the Smith Center, they didn't show for Colleen Phiri and Mia James. Phiri, a native of Haverhill, Mass., posted a game-high 18 points, connecting on four of her five attempts from behind the arc. The 5-11 first-year also grabbed five rebounds and dished out two assists in the winning effort.
James, who hails from Dacula, Ga., orchestrated GW's offense well, using her speed and quickness to push the pace in transition. James finished with 12 points on 5-7 shooting from the floor. She also dished out a game-high eight dimes and pulled down four rebounds. Phiri and James were two of GW's four double-figure scorers in the contest, joining Kamari Sims (13) and Emma Theodorsson (10).
COACH G CAPTURES FIRST WIN
Monday's victory also marked a milestone for Head Coach Ganiyat Adeduntan, her first as bench boss with the Buff & Blue. After four seasons at Colgate, Adeduntan joined the Revolutionaries in March. GW's win over UDC was the first since the 1994-95 season, the last meeting between the two DMV programs. Adeduntan now holds a 66-62 overall record as a D-I head coach and has 74 career victories across all levels of college basketball.
LIGHTING IT UP EARLY
GW's offense was clicking from deep on Monday night, en route to a 15-27 (55.6%) mark in shots from three-point range. The 15 made threes tied the program record for the most in a single game, a mark that was set on Nov. 25, 2022, against ETSU. Eight players connected on at least one triple in the game for GW, highlighted by Phiri's four, Sims' three and two from James and Gabby Reynolds.
SCOUTING THE OWLS
Friday's matchup renews an old rivalry against former conference foes that haven't met since the 2011-12 season, the final year Temple was a member of the Atlantic 10. The Owls are coming off a thrilling 94-85 overtime win over George Mason on Monday night, weathering a late comeback from the Patriots to secure the win in the extra period.
Temple is coming off its second consecutive 20-win season under the guidance of Diane Richardson. Richardson spent four seasons (2012-16) in Foggy Bottom as an assistant coach, winning two A-10 titles during her tenure. The Buff & Blue hold a 28-22 advantage in an all-time series that dates back to 1983.
Tristen Taylor led the Owls in scoring with 19 on Monday night, followed by Saniyah Craig with a monster 16-point, 15-rebound double-double. Temple's season stats are available here.
