WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's basketball team enters a busy weekend of hoops in the DMV, making the short drive to Georgetown on Friday night for a clash with the Hoyas at 7:00 p.m. The Buff & Blue will then return to the Smith Center on Sunday, hosting Morgan State at 2:00 p.m. in Foggy Bottom. Both contests will be carried live on ESPN+.
PHIRI CONTINUES TO IMPRESS
Through the first four games of her rookie season, Colleen Phiri continues to shine for the Buff & Blue. The 5'11" guard from Haverhill, Mass., is leading GW in scoring at 10.8 points a night and has scored in double figures in three of the team's four contests. Her season started on a high note, posting a team-high 18 points in a season-opening win over UDC, and she followed it up with 11 points in her first career road game at Temple on Nov. 7.
After moving into a starting role in her past two games, Phiri posted 11 more points on Monday night at Longwood, showing her versatility by knocking down three triples in the contest. After initially committing to Colgate out of high school, Phiri flipped her allegiance to GW following the announcement of Ganiyat Adeduntan's hiring in late March. Phiri has hit the ground running in the Nation's Capital and will look to continue her early-season momentum as conference play approaches.
THEODORSSON FINDS HER STRIDE
As GW's most senior player on the active roster, it was only a matter of time before Emma Theodorsson found her stride with the Revolutionaries. She did just that on Monday at Longwood, posting a team-high 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. The senior guard is quickly approaching the 100 career games mark (91 currently), having spent two seasons at Bucknell and most recently one year at Loyola Chicago. Monday's double-double was the fourth of her career and the first since her sophomore season in 2023-24. Her well-rounded effort was also accompanied by three assists and a steal on the stat sheet.
SCOUTING THE HOYAS
Friday's matchup with Georgetown renews a local rivalry that dates back to the 1976 season, GW's second year of supporting the varsity program. The two teams have met 38 times since, with the Buff & Blue holding a slim 20-18 lead in the all-time series.
The Hoyas enter the weekend with a 2-2 record after most recently beating Sacred Heart, 77-44, on Tuesday night in the District. Georgetown Head Coach Darnell Haney celebrated his 100th career victory with the win, having posted a 37-33 mark since taking over the program three seasons ago. Earlier this season, Georgetown fell on the road to fellow A-10 member George Mason, dropping a tightly contested 61-54 matchup in overtime.
On the court, Georgetown is led by Khia Miller, who's posting 13.5 ppg through the team's first four games. Laila Jewett is just behind at 10.3 points a night, while Victoria Rivera is adding 8.7 points a contest. Cristen Carter has led the rebounding efforts for the Hoyas, grabbing 8.3 per game, while Jewett leads the program in helpers, dishing out 15 this season. Georgetown's full 2025-26 stats can be found here.
SCOUTING THE BEARS
The Buff & Blue will host a 1-4 Morgan State team on Sunday, who most recently fell to Johns Hopkins, 75-59, on Tuesday night. The Bears' lone win on the season came against Washington Adventist, an 88-49 victory on Nov. 12. Morgan State is led by Nadine Domond, who was hired as the leader of the program last April. Damond played collegiately at Iowa before being selected by the New York Liberty in 1998. She also spent time with the USA National Team as well.
Offensively, Morgan State is paced by Gabrielle Johnson, who's averaging 11.8 points a night. Ja'la Bannerman is adding 10.8 ppg, while Selina Gutierrez has tallied 9.8 points per contest thus far. Maya Woodson leads Morgan State in rebounding at 8.2 a game, while Mihjae Hayes has dished out 13 assists. Morgan State's full 2025-26 stats can be found here.
