Women's Basketball Drops Nail-Biter with Bison, 62-60

Head Coach Ganiyat Adeduntan gave George Washington women's basketball a new starting look Tuesday night at the Smith Center with first-year guard Colleen Phiri getting her first start and Kentucky-transfer Tanah Becker also getting her first career starting nod against the unblemished Howard Bison.
The lineup change brought All A-10 preseason pick Gabby Reynolds off the bench and the sophomore responded with a team- and season-high 15 points, including GW's last nine points of the game, but unfortunately the last that Reynolds and the Revolutionaries would score was at the 5:40 mark of the fourth, and the team was held scoreless the rest of the way in a 62-60 defeat, with neither team finding the bucket in the final 3:17.
GW had a chance to win it in the closing seconds with a three-point shot in front of its bench, but it wasn't to be.
Entering play, George Washington's task was tall against the crosstown foe as Howard had previously defeated Providence out of the Big East and routed Florida A&M to open the season, and the Bison showed why they're picked to win the MEAC by taking a 15-point lead midway through the second. The hosts fought back, led by Reynolds and Jaeda Wilson's 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting, also in a reserve role, while the near-perfect free throw shooting (15-of-16) allowed the slow climb to a 58-57 lead with 6:16 to go. A strong defensive effort also stymied Howard to only nine field goal attempts in the final 10 minutes and a seven-point fourth quarter to keep the nail-biter at finger's reach.
GW now sets its sights on securing its first road win of the season with a trip to Farmville, Va., ticketed for Monday to take on Longwood at 7 p.m.
