WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's basketball team returns to action Wednesday, traveling to UMass for a mid-week clash. Tip-off inside the Mullins Center is slated for 6:00 p.m. with live coverage available on ESPN+.
CAREER-HIGH FOR LEWIS
On Saturday at George Mason, sophomore Sara Lewis turned in a career-high 16 points to go along with a team-high seven rebounds. Lewis, who's the lone Revolutionary to play in all 19 games this season, is averaging 7.5 ppg and a team-best 6.3 rebounds a night. The Atlanta native has gotten into double-figures seven times this season after doing so just once during her rookie season in 2023-24. Her previous career high of 14 was set earlier this year against Towson.
A LOOK AT THE SERIES HISTORY
GW and UMass are no strangers to each other as Wednesday's game marks the 56th meeting all-time between the two programs, the third-most against a single opponent in program history. UMass, along with GW and Duquesne, were founding members of the Atlantic 10 Conference in 1974, but this season marks the final time the Buff & Blue will face the Minutewomen as conference foes as UMass prepares to join the Mid-American Conference (MAC) prior to the 2025-26 academic year.
GW leads the all-time series against UMass, 44-12, dating back to the original meeting on Jan. 11, 1984. Despite losing that initial matchup, the Buff & Blue have enjoyed their fair share of wins over the Minutewomen since then, including a stretch of 21 victories in 22 games from 1987-97. In recent years, GW has sustained similar success, winning nine of the last 11 meetings, including eight straight from 2013-20. Following Wednesday's game, both teams will meet again later this season on Feb. 26, the final chapter in the long history as conference opponents.
SCOUTING THE MINUTEWOMEN
Coming off a 54-49 victory over VCU on Saturday, UMass enters the week 10-10 overall and 5-4 in the Atlantic 10. Prior to beating the Rams, the Minutewomen had lost two in a row, falling to Saint Joseph's and Rhode Island. UMass is led by head coach Mike Leflar, who's in his second year with the program. After going 5-27 in his first season, Leflar has seen vast improvement in his second year, already doubling the team's win total from a year ago through just 20 games this season. Leflar is a 2002 graduate of Boston College and has been on staff with the Minutewomen since 2018.
Megan Olbrys leads the way for UMass' offense, averaging 13.8 ppg on a team-best 56.6% shooting. Olbrya also leads the team in rebounding, averaging 8.2 boards per game and over 2.5 offensive rebounds per night as well. Yahmani McKayle is second on the team in scoring at 12.7 ppg, while Allie Palmieri is just behind with 12.6 ppg. All three have played in every game for UMass this season, with Olbrys and Palmieri also starting in each game as well.
