AMHERST, Mass. – The George Washington women's basketball team made the trip to Amherst for the final time as conference opponents, walking away with a 71-54 defeat at the hands of the Minutewomen.
UMass started the game strong, connecting on 40.9% of their shots to double up GW at the end of the first quarter, 24-12. The Minutewomen benefited from four GW turnovers in the opening quarter, turning it into seven points on the other end, all while not committing a TO themselves through the first 10 minutes.
GW weathered the momentum in the second stanza, outscoring UMass 16-14 and cutting the deficit to 10 at the break, the only quarter GW would outscore the opposition in the game. Momentum in the third quarter swung back in favor of the home team as UMass pushed the lead up to 17 with 6:27 left. However, the Buff & Blue didn't quit, putting together a 9-2 run to cut the deficit down to 10 again late in the third.
Unfortunately, that proved to be the closest GW would get the rest of the way, as Massachusetts held onto a double-digit advantage for the remainder of the game, securing the 71-54 win. GW was paced by Makayla Andrews, who tallied 14 points and six boards off the bench. Maxine Engel netted 11, including three triples, to go along with two assists. First-years Gabby Reynolds and Miriam Diala each chipped in eight points.
GW returns to the Smith Center on Saturday, hosting Saint Joseph's for the team's Black History Month Celebration at 2:00 p.m. Prior to the contest, fans can enjoy brunch as part of a Brunchketball promotion that includes your game ticket. The package can be purchased here.
GW fans can get in the game by directly supporting student-athletes through donations to the Buff & Blue Fund. For more information on GW Athletics, fans are encouraged to visit GWsports.com, or follow the Revolutionaries on social media through X (@GWsports) and Instagram (@gwsports).
