ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Despite a furious second-half comeback that included a 26-13 run over the third quarter, the George Washington women's basketball team couldn't hold on in the final seconds, falling to Saint Louis, 64-63.
After falling behind by 15 points at halftime, GW's second-half adjustments worked wonders, opening the third quarter on a 10-4 run and maintaining the momentum throughout the entire frame. The Buff & Blue continued to claw back, led by junior Filipa Callisto (15 points) and Gabby Reynolds (14 points), to trim the deficit to just two entering the fourth.
The final frame was a thrilling back-and-forth affair that saw three ties and four lead changes throughout. In the final minute, with the score deadlocked at 60 apiece, senior Maxine Enfel came up in a huge way, knocking in a corner triple to give GW a three-point advantage, one point shy of the team's largest lead of the night.
Following Engel's clutch bucket, the Billikens got two points back on a fastbreak layup, then went to the line with just six seconds left and capitalized on two free throws to retake a 64-63 lead. After advancing the ball to the frontcourt off a timeout, GW's last-second attempt was off the mark, sealing SLU's victory. The Revolutionaries fall to 8-9 overall and 1-5 in Atlantic 10 play, while the Billikens improve to 7-11 overall and 1-4 in conference action.
GW receives a week of rest, with VCU traveling to the Smith Center next Wednesday. Tipoff for the International Night contest is set for 6:00 p.m.
