WASHINGTON – Returning to the court with seven days rest, the George Washington women's basketball team welcomes VCU to the DMV on Wednesday night. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 p.m. with live coverage available on Monumental Sports Network and ESPN+ with Byron Kerr and Cami Tapias on the call.
INTERNATIONAL NIGHT & MLK CELEBRATION
Wednesday's contest will serve as both International Night and the program's MLK Day celebration. In honor of the various backgrounds, cultures and nationalities that make up both the women's basketball program and GW as a whole, the contest will aim to highlight and celebrate these individuals.
Along with that, GW will also honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Wednesday as well. Players and coaches will wear custom shooting shirts that aim to honor his work in civil rights. Tickets for the upcoming contest can be purchased here.
SIERRA-VARGAS CONTINUES TO SHINE
After only seeing action in five games through her first two collegiate seasons, junior Natalia Sierra-Vargas has stepped up and appeared in seven games, including three starts, for GW this season. In those games, Sierra-Vargas has made a significant impact on both ends of the court, all while running point for the Buff & Blue offense. Sierra-Vargas now leads the program in assists per game at 2.7 and also boasts a solid 1.4 assist/turnover ratio, which leads the program. Sierra-Vargas has set new career highs in virtually every stat category and is shooting the ball at a solid 46.2% from the floor.
SCOUTING THE RAMS
VCU, who enters the week 9-10 overall and 3-4 in the Atlantic 10, is coming off a 75-42 loss to Richmond on Sunday. The Spiders outscored the Rams 21-7 in the first quarter and 44-15 overall in the first half to run away with the win. VCU is led by Head Coach Beth O'Boyle, who's in her 11th season at the helm of the program. She holds a 180-144 record with the Rams and a 273-227 mark in her 17 years of head coaching experience overall. Under O'Boyle's guidance, VCU captured its first A-10 Tournament Championship in 2021, its first A-10 regular season title in 2019, and she's also guided the Rams to four WNIT appearances as well. She's the program's all-time leader in wins and set the program's record for wins in a single season last year, finishing with 26.
Mary-Anne Asare leads VCU in scoring this season at 16.5 points a night. She ranks sixth in the A-10 in scoring thus far and sits second on VCU in assists per game (2.4) and rebounds per contest (4.5). Timaya Lewis-Eitsey is second on the team in scoring and is the only other Ram who averages double figures at 14.5 ppg. She's played just eight games this season and also leads the program in assist average at 3.1. Mykel Parham is third in the conference in rebounding, averaging 10.2 a game.
