WASHINGTON – Following a 61-53 loss at Fordham on Wednesday, the George Washington women's basketball team returns home for a matinee matchup with Duquesne on Saturday at the Charles E. Smith Center. Tip-off in Foggy Bottom is slated for noon with Byron Kerr and Cami Tapias calling the action live on ESPN+.
REYNOLDS FINDING HER GROOVE AGAIN
First-year Gabby Reynolds has gotten into double figures in GW's last three games, averaging 14.3 ppg in that span. The spike in scoring is a welcome sign after the rookie was held under double digits in eight of the previous nine games prior to her three-game hot streak. Over the past three games, Reynolds is shooting 47.1% from the floor and 41.7% from long range. She's also 6-7 from the free-throw line and averaging four rebounds a game in the recent stretch.
Overall, Reynolds is averaging 10.3 points this season, which is second on GW. She's shooting the ball at a 37.2% clip from the field and is also dishing out 2.1 assists a night. GW will lean on Reynolds' scoring ability as the team navigates its A-10 slate.
HISTORIC SUCCESS AGAINST DUQUESNE
Saturday's contest marks the 77th meeting all-time between the two programs, dating back to the initial matchup on Nov. 22, 1983. Since then, GW has won 59 games against the Dukes, the most victories against a single opponent in program history. In that span, GW also enjoyed the fourth-longest winning streak against a single opponent, winning 23-straight games against Duquesne from 1994-04. The only winning streaks longer came against St. Bonaventure (26 from 1990-07), Dayton (24 from 1996-09) and La Salle (24 from 1985-05). Since 2020, GW has won six of the last eight contests, with Duquesne winning the two most recent meetings last season. The Buff & Blue look to snap the two-game skid and pick up their record 60th win against the Dukes Saturday.
SCOUTING THE DUKES
Duquesne enters the weekend 10-5 overall and holds an equal 1-3 mark to GW in the Atlantic 10 after picking up its first conference win of the season on Wednesday. The Dukes topped Saint Joseph's, 67-64, to get in the conference win column. Despite a disappointing start to conference play, the Dukes' three A-10 losses have only come by a combined eight points, with the largest defeat coming against Davidson, 76-70. Since then, Duquesne has lost to VCU (65-63) and Fordham (64-62).
Duquesne is led by 12th-year head coach Dan Burt, who's been with the program for 18 seasons. Burt spent his first six years in Pittsburgh as an assistant on the Dukes' staff before stepping into the head role prior to the 2013-14 season. Since then, he's amassed a 219-137 overall record, become Duquesne's all-time winningest head coach, and led the program to an NCAA Tournament appearance. Burt and the Dukes advanced to the WNIT a season ago, falling in the Super 16.
On the court, Duquesne is led by do-it-all senior guard Megan McConnell. McConnell leads the program in points per game (20.2 – leads the A-10), assists (5.5 – leads the A-10) and rebounds (7.3 – eighth in the A-10). She's shooting the ball at a 50.9% clip, which is second on the team. Jerni Kiaku is also having a solid 2024-25 season, averaging 13.8 points and leading the team in field goal percentage at 51.4%. Gabby Hutcherson (7.9 ppg) and Kiandra Browne (7.4 ppg) round out Duquesne's top four scorers this season.
