Baseball Welcomes Canisius for Three-Game Weekend Series

WASHINGTON – The George Washington baseball team continues its nine-game homestand with a weekend series against Canisius beginning on Friday at 2:30 p.m. The series extends into Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. matchup and concludes with a noon contest on Sunday. LAST TIME OUT
GW enters the weekend with a 7-5 overall record and winners in six of their last seven contests. The Revolutionaries extended their winning streak to six games on Tuesday with a 9-5 win over UMES, but saw the streak come to an end with a 26-12 defeat to #13 Virginia on Wednesday. In Tuesday's win over the Hawks, GW was led by Brett Young who finished 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Sam Gates also had a solid afternoon with a 2-for-4 line and a run scored, while Alexander Wright finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored from the DH spot. Tyler Blankenship earned the win, his first of the season, after tossing three innings and only allowing one hit. Benny Wilson picked up his second save of the season after throwing 1.1 hitless innings to close out the game.
On Wednesday, Young finished with a monster 3-for-3 day with three RBI and three runs scored. Jude Clough went 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Steve DiTomaso recorded a 2-for-4 line with two runs scored. Bryan Belo finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Robby Wacker recorded one hit, one run and one RBI. McGwire Tuffy scored two runs and notched one base hit, while Cristino Tufano notched a 1-for-2 line with an RBI. GW recorded 16 total hits and didn't record an error in the loss to UVA.
DITOMASO KEEPS PILING HITS
Entering the 2024 season, DiTomaso had tallied 217 career hits, the 21st person in program history to join the 200-hit club. Through 12 games this season, DiTomaso leads the Buff & Blue with 18 total hits, giving him 235 for his career. That places DiTomaso 12th all-time at GW, needing just 14 more to crack the program's top 10. DiTomaso is 64 hits away from tying the program record of 299, set by Tom Zebroski from 2006-10. DiTomaso has registered at least one hit in 11 of his 12 games this season, and has recorded at least two hits on seven occasions.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN GRIFFINS
Canisius enters the weekend 3-6 overall with losses in four of its last five contests. The Golden Griffins dropped a 7-4 contest at Niagara on Tuesday afternoon, while also losing two of three against UNC Greensboro last weekend. The Golden Griffins arrive to the DMV led by Jackson Strong, who boasts a .429 batting average with 15 total hits on the season. Strong has three extra-base hits this season, including two home runs and a triple. Strong also holds a slugging percentage of .657 while tallying five RBI. Carlin Dick holds an average of .313 with nine RBI and two homers. As a team, the Golden Griffins have a team batting average of .228, and the team has six home runs on the year.
Canisius' pitching unit is led by Thomas Russ who has appeared in three games this season, tossing 3.1 total innings. Russ has only allowed two hits on the year and has yet to allow an earned run. Feliz Morin has pitched 10 total innings for Canisius this year, only allowing two earned runs and holding an ERA of 1.80.
