ARLINGTON, Va. – The George Washington baseball team dropped the first game of a three-game set with Canisius, losing 5-2 at Tucker Field on Friday afternoon.
GW recorded the first run of the game, plating a runner in the bottom of the first via a double steal that resulted in Brett Young tallying the run. With runners on first and third, Sam Gates attempted to steal second, with Young breaking towards home on the throw down by Canisius' catcher. Gates was thrown out on the play, but there was no throw back home as Young scored standing up.
The Revolutionaries got another run in the second when Nick Mullen grounded into an RBI double play. Bryan Belo scored from third, while Ellis Schwartz and Mullen were both retired by Canisius' defense. The Golden Griffins got one back in the fourth via an RBI single to left field from Thomas Zwirecki. Canisius tied the game one inning later in the fifth when Mike DeStefano ripped a double down the left field line, scoring JC Spinosa on the play to knot the game at two.
Neither team would score again until the eighth inning when Jackson Strong skyed a ball to deep right field and over the wall for a home run. The ball, which was trailing foul, was ruled fair by the umpires much to the dismay of the GW dugout. After a short conference from the umpiring crew, the play stood and Canisius took its first lead of the afternoon. The Golden Griffins eventually scored two more runs later in the inning, adding cushion to their advantage with a 5-2 lead.
GW would attempt to rally in the ninth with Tim Nicholson reaching base on a walk, but the offense was unable to move him around the bases, with Canisius securing the 5-2 win. GW was only able to muster two hits on the game, the team's lowest offensive output of the season. Benny Wilson was charged with the loss for GW after surrendering the three runs in the eighth inning. He moves to 0-1 on the year. Canisius' Tom Peltier earned the win on the mound, he moves to 2-0 this season. Michael Foltz earned the start for the Revolutionaries, tossing seven innings and allowing two earned runs. Foltz struck out four batters and allowed five total hits. Wilson struck out three batters for the Revolutionaries and allowed four hits in his two innings pitched.
The Buff & Blue continue its weekend series with Canisius on Saturday, with first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m. Fans can follow live coverage of the action on ESPN+, while stats will be available on GWsports.com.
