WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's basketball team celebrated Senior Day with a 50-43 victory over Loyola Chicago on Saturday afternoon. The win moved GW's streak to three in a row, and coupled with a Dayton loss, earned the Buff & Blue a first-round bye in next week's A-10 Women's Basketball Championship.
Prior to the contest, nine members of GW's program were honored as part of Senior Day festivities. Graduate students Madison Buford, Nya Lok, Faith Blethen, Mayowa Taiwo, Essence Brown and Maren Durant were recognized, while seniors Taylor Webster and Asjah Inniss were also honored. Graduate Assistant Reilly Howard was also honored as part of the ceremony. Taiwo also received special recognition pregame for eclipsing the 1,000-rebound mark for her illustrious career. Taiwo pulled down a career-high 20 rebounds against UMass on Feb. 24 to put her over the mark. Taiwo received a commemorative basketball from GW Head Coach Caroline McCombs to celebrate the milestone. Taiwo is the only player in the Atlantic 10 to put up 20 rebounds in a conference game this season.
Nya Robertson led GW in scoring, putting up a game-high 16 points and grabbing three rebounds to lead GW to victory. Robertson got the offense going in the first quarter, recording the team's first eight points of the game. Neither squad could find separation, but Loyola Chicago did manage to maintain a slim lead throughout the quarter, eventually leading 17-15 after one. However, GW's signature stout defense kicked in during the second, holding the Ramblers to just nine points in the stanza and securing a 27-26 lead at halftime.
Out of the break, GW's defense continued to make life hard on Loyola Chicago. GW only allowed eight points in the third quarter, outscoring the opposition 12-8 in the stanza. The fourth quarter was much of the same as the Revolutionaries held the Ramblers to just nine points, the Ramblers' third straight single-digit scoring quarter to secure the 50-43 win. Loyola Chicago made things interesting midway through the fourth, cutting GW's lead down to three at the 6:57 mark, but GW would close on an 8-4 run to secure the win.
Along with Robertson, Brown also had a solid showing with 14 points and five rebounds, while Taiwo continued her streak of collecting at least 10 rebounds with 11 caroms today to go along with six points. Taiwo has now tallied at least 10 rebounds in six straight games. Inniss also finished with six points while also adding eight boards and three rebounds as well.
GW shifts gears to the 2024 Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship which gets underway Wednesday in Henrico, Va. The Revolutionaries earned the No. 10 seed and are set for a 5:00 p.m. meeting with No. 7 seed Saint Louis on Thursday, with the winner moving on to battle second-seeded VCU on Friday.
