WASHINGTON – Coming on the heels of a dominant 69-48 win over St. Bonaventure on Wednesday, the George Washington women's basketball team looks to split the season series with Richmond on Sunday afternoon after falling to the Spiders 70-66 earlier this year. Live coverage of Sunday's matchup will be available on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT
The Revolutionaries got back to their winning ways on Wednesday night, snapping a six-game skid with a dominating victory of St. Bonaventure inside the Smith Center. Despite the lopsided score, the game did not start in the same fashion. St. Bonaventure got out to a fast start, hitting GW quick for an early 13-6 advantage. GW weathered the storm and outscored the Bonnies 16-5 in the second quarter to take a 25-18 lead in into the break.
Out of the halftime break GW caught fire, putting up 44 points in the final 20 minutes of action and cruising to the 69-48 win. Leading the charge for the Buff & Blue was Mayowa Taiwo, who put together a stellar performance. Taiwo tallied nine points and pulled down a season-high 15 rebounds, just nearly missing the double-double. On top of her stellar rebounding numbers, Taiwo also swiped a career-high eight steals, with seven of them coming in the first half. Taiwo rounded out her stat-stuffing performance with four assists and a block. Also playing strong for GW was Nya Lok, who finished with 18 points, six rebounds and five assists. Essence Brown got into double-figures as well with 17 points, while Asjah Inniss registered 10 points and four rebounds.
TAIWO NEARS REBOUNDING MILESTONE
Following her 15-rebound performance on Wednesday night, Taiwo now has 936 career boards. With just seven games left in the regular season, Taiwo is 64 boards away from eclipsing the 1,000-rebound mark. Before making it to 1,000, Taiwo would need to pass GW legends Jonquel Jones - a 2024 GW Athletics Hall of Fame inductee - and Tajama Abraham who have 961 and 970 career rebounds, respectively. If Taiwo were to eclipse 1,000, she would join Caira Washington and Darlene Saar as the only members of the program to achieve the feat. Washington is second on GW's all-time list with 1,063, while Saar sits atop the rankings with 1,139. If Taiwo were to reach the mark before the end of the regular season she would need to average 9.2 rebounds per game.
SCOUTING THE SPIDERS
Richmond enters Sunday's contest red-hot at 20-4 overall and 10-1 in the Atlantic 10. The Spiders have won three-straight contests and sit in second in the conference standings, behind Saint Joseph's who has an 11-1 record in A-10 play. The Spiders are led by Aaron Roussell who's in his fifth season with Richmond. Roussell has an 85-55 record with Richmond and a 397-177 overall mark in his 20 seasons of collegiate head coaching experience. GW holds a 27-18 lead over the Spiders in the all-time series, but Richmond has had recent success over the Buff & Blue, winning six of the last seven meetings.
On the court, Richmond is led by Maggie Doogan who averages 15.0 points and 5.3 rebounds per contest. Along with Doogan, Grace Townsend averages 12.7 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, while Rachel Ulstrom puts in 11.6 points and grabs 4.6 rebounds a night. Addie Budnik leads the team in blocks, averaging 2.6 per game, while Townsend leads the team in assists with 4.8 a contest.
