WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's basketball team looks to snap a six-game skid on Wednesday night when the Revolutionaries welcome St. Bonaventure to the Smith Center. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m., with live coverage available on ESPN+.
DURANT EYES REBOUNDING MILESTONE
Graduate student Maren Durant draws closer to a career milestone that few will ever achieve. After grabbing seven rebounds against VCU last Sunday, Durant now has 946 career boards across her five seasons of college basketball. Before transferring to GW, Durant spent four years at Boston University where she accumulated 832 rebounds. Durant achieved this in 108 career games with the Terriers, giving her an average of 7.7 rpg. Now with GW, Durant has added to her career totals by tallying 114 rebounds through 22 games with the Revolutionaries this season, meaning she needs just 54 more rebounds to join the 1,000-rebound club. Durant will have eight remaining regular season games plus the Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament to work her way to the milestone number. Durant has started in 17 of GW's 22 games this season and averages 5.0 rpg which is third-best on the squad.
SCOUTING THE BONNIES
St. Bonaventure enters Wednesday's meeting 4-17 overall and 1-9 in the A-10 following a 65-57 home loss to Davidson last Wednesday. Earlier this season, the two programs met in western New York, with GW walking away victorious and earning its first A-10 victory of the year. The Revolutionaries topped the Bonnies 78-62, led by Robertson's career-high 31 points. Since that day, both programs have gone winless, losing a combined 11-straight games.
The Bonnies are led by Jim Crowley who's in his 27th year as an NCAA head coach and his 17th year at the helm of the Bonnies' program. Crowley got his start as a bench boss with D-III Keuka from 1993-96, before transitioning to the head coaching gig with St. Bonaventure in 2000. After 16 seasons with the Bonnies, Crowley left to lead Providence's women's program. Crowley spent seven seasons in Rhode Island before returning to St. Bonaventure prior to the 2023-24 season. During his first stint with the Bonnies, Crowley was named the ESPN.com National Coach of the Year in 2021 and is a three-time Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year (2009, 2012 & 2014). He led the Bonnies to four WNIT berths during his time and led the program to its first Sweet 16 appearance in 2012. Crowley holds a 6-11 record against GW during his coaching career, accounting for two-thirds of St. Bonaventure's total wins against GDUB in program history. Historically, the Buff & Blue have been dominant over the Bonnies, holding a commanding 42-9 lead in the all-time series, the fourth-most wins against a single opponent in program history.
This season, the Bonnies are paced by Dani Haskell who averages 13.1 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. Haskell recently joined St. Bonaventure's 1,000-point club, and leads the team in free-throw percentage at 80.4%. Nadechka Laccen tallied 10.4 points and 4.7 rebounds per game for the Bonnies, while Isabellah Middleton grabs a team-high 5.6 rebounds and scores 9.9 points per night.
LAST TIME OUT
Entering the day as winners in six of its last seven contests, VCU continued its red-hot play, cruising past GW, 71-51. The Rams started fast and didn't look back, draining their first four field goals for a quick 9-2 lead. VCU would ultimately finish 10-15 (66.7%) from the field in the opening period, building a 24-10 lead. The nation's top-ranked defense held GW in check all day, only allowing the Buff & Blue to connect on 5-17 (29.4%) field-goal attempts in the first 10 minutes, and 19-58 (32.8%) for the entire game. The second quarter started much like the first with VCU using a quick 8-2 burst to extend the deficit to 20 at 32-12. GW went on a run of their own midway through the period, stringing together seven-straight points, but couldn't come within 15 points of the Rams the rest of the day. VCU rode a 20-point cushion for the entire second half, eventually winning the contest 71-51.
Graduate student Essence Brown put together a solid performance for the Revolutionaries, tallying 13 points and pulling down nine rebounds. Brown also recorded two steals for GW. Graduate Maren Durant and sophomore Nya Robertson both finished with seven points, while graduate Nya Lok tallied six. Durant grabbed seven boards, while Lok finished with four rebounds and a team-high three steals.
