Women's Basketball Sweeps Saint Bonaventure, 69-48

WASHINGTON - Of all of the things that haven't gone the way that the GW Revs women's basketball team hoped or expected this season, one thing has been perfectly executed. George Washington has had St. Bonaventure's number. After securing its first A-10 win of the season against the Bonnies on the road last month, they completed the season-sweep Wednesday night at home in a 69-48 victory for the team's second conference win of the season.
On Nationals Girls and Women in Sports Day, GW was not going to leave its fans disappointed. Despite starting slowly and allowing the Bonnies a 13-6 head start, GDUB was undaunted. A three from first-year Kamari Sims, perhaps in tribute to fellow Riverdale Baptist-product Jonquel Jones who will be enshrined in the GW Athletics Hall of Fame this weekend, sent GW into the second quarter trailing by just four. The momentum pushed the home team to a 16-5 second quarter advantage to build a 27-18 lead at intermission.
Domination inside led to a 36-12 points in the paint advantage, keyed by a monster game from graduate student Mayowa Taiwo who is rivaling the soon-to-be Hall of Famer Jones with what she's done on the glass in her GW career. Taiwo's game included 15 rebounds and a career-high eight steals, while muscling in nine points in a near double-double.
Nya Lok continued her career climb in the scoring column, after recently topping the 1,000-point mark, dropping another 18 on the Bonnies. Her scoring came on an efficient 6-of-12 night from the floor that featured a trio of three-pointers in seven attempts. As a team, GW shot at nearly a 40% clip from long range (7-of-18, .389). Lok's all-around game also included six rebounds and a season-high five assists.
In holding their guests below 50 points, George Washington saw just a .289 field goal percentage from the Bonnies, on a night when the hosts shot a relatively torrid .435 en route to the blowout win. All of the depth was on GW's side with Essence Brown coming off the bench to score 17 points, leading a reserve unit that out-did their foe's bench 26-0.
GW will look to keep its winning ways going when it visits Richmond Sunday. Tip time from the Robins Center comes at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
