RICHMOND, Va. – Entering the day as winners in six of its last seven contests, VCU continued its red-hot play, cruising past the George Washington women's basketball team, 71-51.
The Rams started fast and didn't look back, draining their first four field goals for a quick 9-2 lead. VCU would ultimately finish 10-15 (66.7%) from the field in the opening period, building a 24-10 lead. The nation's top-ranked defense held GW in check all day, only allowing the Buff & Blue to connect on 5-17 (29.4%) field-goal attempts in the first 10 minutes, and 19-58 (32.8%) for the entire game.
The second quarter started much like the first with VCU using a quick 8-2 burst to extend the deficit to 20 at 32-12. GW went on a run of their own midway through the period, stringing together seven-straight points, but couldn't come within 15 points of the Rams the rest of the day. VCU rode a 20-point cushion for the entire second half, eventually winning the contest 71-51.
Graduate student Essence Brown put together a solid performance for the Revolutionaries, tallying 13 points and pulling down nine rebounds. Brown also recorded two steals for GW. Aside from Brown, no other GW Rev was able to get in double figures. Graduate Maren Durant and sophomore Nya Robertson both finished with seven points, while graduate Nya Lok tallied six. Durant grabbed seven boards, while Lok finished with four rebounds and a team-high three steals. VCU was led by Timaya Lewis-Eutsey with 15 points, three rebounds and two assists.
The Buff & Blue return to the Smith Center Wednesday when they host St. Bonaventure. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 p.m. with live coverage available on ESPN+.
