WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's basketball team heads south to Davidson for the final road test of the 2024 regular season. Tip-off against the Wildcats is slated for 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening, with live coverage carried on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT
GW picked up a pivotal 59-55 victory over UMass last Saturday to keep momentum in the right direction heading towards the A-10 Championship. After falling behind in the first quarter, GW turned things around in the second, limiting the Minutewomen to just nine points and outscoring UMass 16-9 in the stanza. GW led the game 29-25 at the halftime break but were ultimately outscored 21-17 in the third to deadlock the score at 46 apiece heading into the final 10 minutes of action. GW wouldn't be denied down the stretch, relying on veteran Mayowa Taiwo and first-year Kamari Sims to lead the charge towards victory. The Revolutionaries were too much to contain down the stretch, eventually winning by a final score of 59-55.
Taiwo, who played all 40 minutes of the game, finished with a monster 20 rebounds to pace GW on the glass. Her 19th rebound of the game was a significant one, giving her 1,000 career boards. She becomes just the third player in program history to achieve the feat on a day when she set a new career-high as well. Sims also enjoyed a career-best performance, putting in 16 points to lead GW in scoring. Sims dished out three assists and grabbed two boards as well. Nya Robertson was the only other Revolutionary to reach double figures, finishing with 10 points. Taiwo, Asjah Inniss and Sara Lewis all added eight points as well.
THE A-10 LANDSCAPE
Entering the final week of the regular season, GW currently sits in 12th place in the Atlantic 10 women's basketball standings with a 4-12 record in conference play. GW and La Salle hold the same conference record, but the nod goes to the Buff & Blue due to their head-to-head victory over the Explorers on Feb. 14. One spot above GDUB in 11th place is Dayton who boasts a 5-11 conference record. Saint Louis and Fordham occupy the #9 and #10 seeds with a 7-9 A-10 mark. GW will be unable to finish higher than the 11th seed with Fordham and Saint Louis holding a three-game lead over the Revolutionaries with only two games to play. As it sits currently, GW would take part in the 12-seed vs. 13-seed matchup on day one of the A-10 Tournament. A full link to the tournament seeding breakdown can be found here.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
Davidson enters Wednesday's matchup battered after canceling its previous two games due to non-COVID health and safety protocols. The Wildcats are 18-9 on the year and 8-8 in A-10 play but have lost three straight games including the two forfeits and a 61-49 defeat at Rhode Island on Feb. 17. Davidson is led by head coach Gayle Fulks who's in her seventh season at the helm of the program. Fulks and Davidson opened the season on a tear, defeating ACC foes Wake Forest and Duke, while also dropping a tight 74-70 contest at 16th-ranked North Carolina. Fulks has a 104-102 record at Davidson and holds a 6-2 mark over GW in her seven seasons. Davidson has the third-ranked defense in the A-10 this season, holding opponents to 55.8 points per game. The Wildcats also rank third in team field goal percentage, shooting a combined 44.1% from the field.
On the court, the Wildcats are led by Charlise Dunn who averages 12.7 ppg and 6.1 rpg. Dunn has played in 23 games this season, making 16 starts, and she shoots the ball at 46.8% from the field. Millie Prior has started in 25 games this season and averages 9.9 points and a team-high 7.6 rebounds per contest, while Issy Morgan averages 8.5 points per night. Prior also leads the team in field goal percentage, shooting the ball at a 57% clip on the year.
