Women’s Basketball Welcomes UMass for Alumni Day

WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's basketball team returns to the Charles E. Smith Center on Saturday for a matinee contest with UMass at 12:00 p.m. The meeting marks Alumni Day for the Buff & Blue as the Revolutionaries will greet alums from all decades of GW women's basketball history. Live coverage of the A-10 clash will air on Monumental Sports Network and ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT
GW suffered a 79-69 setback on Wednesday afternoon at Duquesne. Despite holding a 26-22 first quarter lead, the Dukes battled back to salvage a slim 40-39 advantage at halftime. After both teams scored an even 17 points apiece in the third, it was all Duquesne in the fourth who outscored the Revolutionaries 22-13 to secure the pivotal conference win. The contest marked Education Day for Duquesne and drew a program-record attendance of 3,023.
Leading the charge for GW was Nya Robertson who poured in a game-high 29 points on 10-21 shooting from the field and 6-11 from deep. Kamari Sims tallied 11 points and grabbed four rebounds for GW off the bench, while Mayowa Taiwo had another monster game in the paint, corralling a game-high 15 rebounds and chipping in seven points. Madison Buford notched nine points in seven minutes of playing time for the Buff & Blue, all of which came in the second quarter, while Asjah Inniss had a well-rounded game with five points, five assists and five rebounds.

Wednesday's game at Duquesne also marked history for Taiwo as she took over the program record for career games played with 131. Taiwo passes Tajama Abraham, Lisa Cermignano and Sarah-Jo Lawrence who all had 130 games played during their GW careers. With her fifth rebound against the Dukes, Taiwo also slid into third on GW's all-time rebounding leaderboard. She now has 981 boards for her career, needing just 19 more to become the third player in program history to eclipse 1,000 (Caira Washington & Darlene Saar).

The Minutewomen are last place in the Atlantic 10 standings, holding a 1-15 record in conference play, with the team's lone win coming against Dayton on Jan. 2 by a score of 76-66. UMass is led by head coach Mike Leflar who's in his first season as a Division I bench boss. Leflar is a 2002 graduate of Boston College and served in various roles on the UMass staff from 2018-2023 before taking the head job entering the 2023-24 season
On the court, the Minutewomen are led by Kristin Williams who averages 12.0 ppg. Williams also leads the team in assists per game at 2.3. Alexsia Rose averages 11.4 points and 2.1 rebounds per game, while Stefanie Kulesza puts in 11.2 points and grabs 6.9 rebounds per contest. Chinenye Odenigbo leads the team in field goal percentage at 50.0%, while Bre Bellamy shoots the ball at a 47.3% clip.
