Women's Basketball Topples UMass, 59-55, in Career-Best Day for Taiwo
2/24/2024 5:25:00 PM | Women's Basketball
WASHINGTON - A busy Saturday at GW saw women's basketball host UMass, while their peers in baseball and lacrosse also entertained foes in the District, men's basketball competes at Saint Louis, softball battles in North Carolina, women's indoor track runs for gold in the A-10 Championships, and men's and women's swimming & diving own the day in dominating fashion at the A-10 Championships in Norfolk, Va. Making sure to do its part, women's basketball dispatched the 1-16 (A-10) Minutewomen in a 59-55 contest, and grad student Mayowa Taiwo made her presence known.
In the full 40 minutes of action, Taiwo averaged a rebound every-other-minute, pulling down a career-high 20 to put her over the 1,000 career-rebound mark as she continues to chase down the program's all-time greats. After the team's entered the final period knotted at 46, the foes were locked in a two-point game with 90 seconds to play as GW clung to a 57-55 edge. UMass wouldn't score the rest of the way and a pair of Kamari Sims free throws put the game out of reach as George Washington won its third-straight home game.
After trailing by three after the first ten minutes, 16-13, the GW Revs turned the table in the second, outscoring the Minutewomen, 16-9, to take a four-point edge into intermission. Caroline McCombs' trademarked defense roared in the second quarter, forcing six turnovers in that stanza alone while allowing just 3-of-10 field goal attempts from UMass to find their mark.
Massachusetts fought back and opened the third on a 12-3 run, eventually settling for the tied ballgame after 30 minutes and leaving the fourth to decide it.
Sims' game-clinching freebies were two of her team-high 16 points, while Nya Robertson found her way into double figures with 10. The defense was the story once again though for GDUB, who held their guests to nine points and a .231 field goal percentage in the fourth when it mattered most.
With two games to play in the regular season, seeding is still at stake to determine who GW will play in its Atlantic 10 Championship tournament opener, Wednesday March 6th in Henrico, Va. Before then, GDUB visits Davidson Wednesday night at 7 p.m. before closing the books on regular season with Senior Day a week from today (3/2) live on Monumental Sports Network at 2 p.m. vs. Loyola Chicago.
