Taiwo Makes History, Women’s Basketball Falls at Duquesne

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – On the day where Mayowa Taiwo set the program record for career games played (131) and moved into third place on GW's all-time rebounding list (981), the George Washington women's basketball team couldn't match the offensive firepower of Duquesne, falling by a final score of 79-69.
Taiwo made history by passing Tajama Abraham, Lisa Cermignano and Sarah-Jo Lawrence for the top spot in GW's career games played leaderboard. In her 131 career contests, Taiwo has started in 114 of them, including all 27 for the Revolutionaries this year. Taiwo also passed Abraham on the program's rebounding leaderboard this afternoon with her fifth board of the game. Abraham collected 970 boards in her career, the second most in program history at the time of her graduation in 1997. Since then, Caira Washington finished with 1,063 for second place on the list, while Darlene Saar holds the top spot with 1,139. Taiwo is now 19 rebounds away from 1,000 for her career with three regular season games remaining.
Both teams got out to a scorching start in the game, combining for 48 total points and 63.3% shooting in the first quarter. Nya Robertson tallied 13 points in the opening frame, leading the GW Revs to a 26-22 advantage. Duquesne outscored the Buff & Blue 18-13 in the second quarter, aided by an 8-4 run to open the frame that tied the score at 30-30 with 5:29 left until halftime. Despite nine points from Madison Buford who gave GW a spark off the bench, the Dukes still managed to hold onto a slim 40-39 lead at halftime.
Out of the break, both teams continued to trade buckets, scoring an identical 17 points in the quarter to keep the game tight. Taiwo was a monster on the glass in the third, grabbing seven of her 15 boards in the 10 minutes of action. Robertson kept her hot hand off of the break, tallying eight points in the quarter.
In the fourth, the Dukes held a slim 67-64 lead with 3:52 left in the game. From that point on, Duquesne closed the game on a 12-5 run to secure the victory over the Revolutionaries. Robertson led the way for GW, recording a game-high 29 points. Taiwo finished with seven points and 15 rebounds, while Kamari Sims added 11 points and four rebounds off the Buff & Blue bench. Buford finished with nine points in seven minutes of playing time, all of which came in the second quarter. Duquesne was led by all-conference guard Megan McConnel with 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Jerni Kiaku added 13 points, while Ayanna Townsend and Amaya Hamilton both finished with 12 apiece.
GW returns to the Smith Center Saturday for a matinee with UMass. Tip-off for the team's Alumni Day is set for 12:00 p.m., with live coverage carried on ESPN+.
